A Houston mother shot her 4-year-old daughter to death and then turned the gun on herself just hours after a judge awarded the child to the girl’s father.

Cibelle Savella, 35, killed her daughter Vivian inside her $824,000 Houston home on Tuesday night, then shot herself, the New York Post reported. The mother was hospitalized and died a day later.

The shooting came roughly eight hours after a custody hearing that went against her. A judge had placed Vivian in the primary care of her father, Aaron Savella, and the little girl was supposed to go home to him that evening. She never arrived.

Houston Police Lieutenant Larry Crowson described the sequence in plain terms.

Crowson said:

"There was a custody hearing earlier today that didn’t go well for the mother."

He added:

"She came home, shot her 4-year-old, and then shot herself."

Father followed every court order

Aaron Savella and Cibelle Savella divorced in November 2024 after four years of marriage. A bitter legal fight over Vivian followed.

Surviving relatives said Aaron did what the law required of a parent trying to protect his child. He trusted the courts. He followed every order. He waited for the process to work.

On Tuesday, that process finally put Vivian in his primary care. The handover was set for that night. Instead, the mother killed the child and herself at the Houston house.

In a statement, the relatives said:

"Vivian was 4 years old. She was loved without limit by her father, Aaron, and by everyone whose life she touched. There are no words for what has been taken from us."

They continued:

"Aaron did everything the law asks of a parent who is trying to protect his child. He trusted the courts."

And:

"He followed every order. He waited for the process to work. On Tuesday, a judge placed Vivian in his primary care, and she was supposed to come home to him that evening. She never did."

Court hit the mother with tight restrictions

The Tuesday ruling did more than shift primary care. Reporting on the filing described a stack of limits on the mother.

She was banned from speaking to her daughter in Portuguese unless one of the supervisors could speak the language. Cibelle Savella was originally from Brazil.

She was also barred from attending any school performances and extracurricular activities. The court ordered her to pay child support to her ex-husband and to cover 50% of any out-of-pocket medical expenses.

It was not immediately clear why she lost custody or drew those restrictions. No full court order text, judge name, or case number has been detailed in the available accounts.

Lawyer calls the outcome unlike anything in 28 years

Charlotte Rainwater, the lawyer who represented Aaron Savella, said the family is shattered.

Rainwater said:

"the family is devastated by this outcome,"

She has practiced family law for 28 years. She said she had never seen anything like this.

Rainwater said:

"I’ve been practicing family law for 28 years and have never experienced anything like this."

She also said:

"I don’t think anyone in this courtroom on Tuesday contemplated this could be the outcome."

No criminal charges were detailed after the mother’s death. Firearm specifics, shot counts, and formal cause-of-death findings beyond the police account were not laid out in the reporting.

What is known is the timeline. Tuesday hearing. Primary care to the father. Handover due that night. Within hours, the child was dead at her mother’s hands inside the Houston home. The mother died the next day.

A father who followed the rules still lost his daughter because a parent who lost in court chose murder over the law. Courts can award custody. They cannot stop a parent bent on destroying the child the system just tried to protect.
