A Florida mother faces four felony child neglect counts after leaving her kids home alone for a Bahamas cruise, and a Miami judge rejected her attorney’s defense in court.
Nathalie Belizaire, 29, was taken into custody Monday as she stepped off Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Conquest in Miami, Fox News reported.
Authorities charged her with four felony counts of child neglect without great bodily harm after North Miami Beach police found her four children unattended in her apartment, including a 2-month-old infant and a 2-year-old toddler.
Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer did not hide her reaction at Tuesday’s arraignment. She called the case one you cannot invent and zeroed in on the basic duty a parent owes small children.
Lether Bazile, the father of the 2-month-old, told police Belizaire had claimed she was leaving the children with their great-grandmother.
Two days earlier, he saw her WhatsApp story appearing to show a Carnival Cruise Line ticket. He stopped by the North Miami Beach home, saw a television glowing through the blinds, and heard children’s voices. He called police right away.
Officers entered and found no adult. Bodycam video captured the four children coming out of hiding in a bathroom. The group included the infant, the toddler, a pre-teen, and what appeared to be a teenage girl holding the newborn.

Denise Wilkes, the children’s grandmother, told officers Belizaire had promised to drop the kids off and never showed. Belizaire’s brother, Steven Borgella, said his sister texted him at 8 p.m. ET on the day the children were found, asking him to check on them.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested Belizaire as she disembarked Monday. She declined to speak to officers.
By Tuesday she was in Miami-Dade court in orange jail attire. She wiped away a tear as the case was laid out.
Judge Glazer set bond at $10,000, $2,500 per child, and ordered Belizaire to stay away until the Department of Children and Families can investigate.
The judge’s comments were blunt. She said the poor kids were home alone and asked the question hanging over the whole hearing.
Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer said:
"Who leaves four little kids alone to go on a cruise?"
She added that officials were grateful nothing worse happened to those children, and she stressed again that the facts were hard to invent.
Judge Glazer also said:
"You cannot make this up."
Belizaire’s defense attorney argued the neglect claim was still only an allegation and said she denies it. The lawyer pressed a broader point about who held responsibility while she was gone.
The defense attorney said:
"The question is who was the one responsible for the children at the time?"
The attorney added that fathers, grandparents, and other people can be in charge of children, not only mothers.
Judge Glazer cut through that framing. She said responsibility usually runs to the mother, the person who gave birth to them, and noted that mothers always know who their children are. Fathers may not, she said, and it looked like different fathers were involved here. One of those fathers grew concerned and called the police.
When the defense repeated the denial, the judge answered that of course she denies it, then pointed to the arrest itself: officers took her into custody as she got off the cruise ship.
This was not Belizaire’s first brush with police. In January 2025 she faced aggravated battery charges after allegedly pepper-spraying a neighbor in the face during a dispute involving her daughter.
The new case does not charge great bodily harm. The children were found alive. The charge is still four felony counts of child neglect for leaving them without an adult while their mother took a three-day trip to the Bahamas.
The sequence is straightforward. A WhatsApp story raised a father’s alarm. Police found four children hiding in a bathroom. The mother was arrested at the port on the way back from the cruise. A judge rejected the attempt to treat parental duty as someone else’s job.
Parents do not get a free pass to vanish for a vacation while a newborn and three other children sit home alone. When a father has to call police because voices are coming from an empty apartment, the system is already cleaning up a failure that should never have happened. Accountability starts with the adult who walked onto that ship.
