A Miami County jury took just two and a half hours to convict former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn of murdering his wife Ashley after hearing affair texts about getting rid of her.
Daily Mail reporting describes a Tuesday guilty verdict against Caleb Flynn, 40, for the killing of his wife Ashley, 37, who was shot while she slept in their Tipp City, Ohio home on February 16.
Prosecutors told the jury Flynn staged a break-in story after the shooting. Police said the couple’s two daughters, then ages 9 and 11, were home. Flynn’s bond was revoked on the spot. Deputies handcuffed him and walked him out. Sentencing is set for October 5, and he faces life in prison without parole.
Flynn had pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, tampering with evidence, and several other charges. On Monday afternoon before the verdict, prosecutors moved to dismiss two misdemeanor counts of intimidation of an attorney, victim, or witness.
Prosecutors argued Flynn wanted out of the marriage without losing custody, a high-paying job at Ashley’s family business, or his church role. They said he carried on a years-long affair with Alleigha Botner, a 24-year-old worship leader who had met him in 2022 as a 20-year-old intern at Christian Life Center in Dayton.
Botner testified the romance began in early 2024. She said the pair exchanged more than 100,000 texts, got matching tattoos, and traded ultimatums about leaving the marriage. She resigned her church role after the case broke open and moved to North Carolina.
Jurors heard Flynn’s own messages. One listed what he said he was willing to risk: “daughters, a quarter-million-dollar salary job, a place to live, possibly a church I serve at, public shame and humiliation, and way more.”
Another text read: “I was up until 4am last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail.”
He also wrote: “I’ll work on getting rid of her. Until then, I love you.”
The night before Ashley’s death, Botner sent Flynn research on divorce, custody, deleting messages, and how a spouse could prove infidelity. Shortly before midnight, Flynn messaged her: “Good night, tomorrow’s a big day. I’ve got to get to bed.” He added: “I choose you, I’m about to be free.”
Botner had written lines of her own in the message chain, including “Until she’s gone, I’m gone,” and later: “I’m not asking that you take her life, obviously, because that’s not what you should do, and I know you actually wouldn’t,” followed by “But to make the divorce happen, it would change everything.”
On the morning of the killing she messaged: “Caleb, what’s going on? Were you involved? Is this real?” She later deleted that message, she testified, fearing a phone exam. On the stand she told jurors: “In my mind, it just seemed like too much of a coincidence that, the day he’s divorcing her, she’s just dead all of a sudden.”
Flynn’s story never changed in open court. He told police in a 911 call that a burglar killed Ashley. He insisted he had been sleeping in another room with his daughters when an intruder came in through the garage.
Defense attorney Patrick Mulligan told the jury no gun was found and no evidence showed Flynn fired a gun that day. Mulligan argued investigators rushed to judgment and that publicity around the affair warped the case.

Mulligan also said: “The issue here isn’t, ‘Was he a good husband?’” He claimed the ugly texts were written to make Botner feel good, not to prove a killing plan.
The jury rejected that theory after two and a half hours. When the verdict was read, Flynn’s lip quivered. He wept, shook, and bowed his head in prayer. His father sat behind him and looked heartbroken as officers led him away.
Flynn appeared on American Idol in 2013. Ashley encouraged the tryout. He sang for Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson, and Nicki Minaj and did not advance to Hollywood. Years later he served and preached at Christian Life Center while Botner worked the worship team. A September 2023 stage photo placed her out front and her married lover on guitar behind her.
By trial, prosecutors framed a plain motive: an affair, pressure to end the marriage, and a refusal to surrender custody, paycheck, or church standing the honest way. Botner’s final ultimatum, she said, came about a month before Ashley was killed.
Ashley Flynn was shot in her own bed in a Tipp City home north of Dayton. Her daughters were in the house. A jury has now branded their father her killer. He goes to sentencing on October 5 knowing the top end is life without parole.
A man who sang on national television, drew a church paycheck, and wrote about “getting rid” of his wife now answers to a guilty verdict, and two girls who will grow up without their mother.
