The Democratic National Committee's internal autopsy of the 2024 election concluded that Kamala Harris lost significant support because of the Biden administration's approach to the war in Gaza.
The party has kept those findings under lock and key, but Axios reported that the still-secret research has now begun to leak, and what it reveals is a party that already knows what went wrong but would rather bury the evidence than reckon with it.
Party leaders decided last year to hide the research from the public. That decision alone tells you more than the autopsy itself ever could.
According to the reporting, as noted by Townhall, DNC aides assembling the post-election report held a closed-door conversation with activists from the IMEU Policy Project, a pro-Palestinian organization. During that meeting, the DNC shared its own internal data on the Gaza issue's electoral impact.
Hamid Bendaas, a spokesperson for the IMEU Policy Project, described what they were told:
"The DNC shared with us that their own data also found that policy was, in their words, a 'net-negative' in the 2024 election."
Two other senior aides at the pro-Palestinian organization also confirmed the DNC had reached that conclusion. Axios independently verified the finding.
So the party's own numbers told them the Biden administration's Gaza stance cost Harris votes. They buried the report. And then they shared the data privately with an advocacy group while keeping voters and rank-and-file Democrats in the dark. The transparency party, everyone.
The Gaza problem didn't exist in a vacuum. It landed on a candidate who was installed, not chosen. Democrats put Harris at the top of the ticket after they kicked Joe Biden to the curb following his embarrassing debate performance. There was no primary contest, no voter mandate, no demonstration that she could win a competitive race.
History suggested she couldn't. When she ran in 2020, she performed so poorly that she dropped out before Iowa and didn't secure a single primary delegate. The party elevated her anyway, betting that identity and momentum would substitute for a real campaign.
During her brief campaign, Harris sought to strike a balance on the conflict, showing strong support for Israel while calling for a ceasefire and expressing sympathy for Palestinians under attack in Gaza as well as the hostages being held by Hamas. She tried to be everything to everyone. The DNC's own data now confirms that strategy satisfied no one.
The instinct here is worth watching. The DNC conducted an autopsy, found an uncomfortable truth, and locked it away. This is not the behavior of a party interested in course correction. This is damage control dressed up as introspection.
Consider what the secrecy protects. If the autopsy were released, it would force Democrats to answer a series of questions they have no interest in answering:
These are not academic questions. They describe a coalition that is pulling itself apart on one of the most consequential foreign policy issues of the decade, and whose leadership would rather suppress its own research than face the rift honestly.
It's also worth noting who doesn't have this problem. Sen. John Fetterman expressed unconditional support for Israel and didn't seem to suffer any existential political crisis for it. Clarity, even unpopular clarity, tends to age better than calculated ambiguity. Harris tried to thread a needle and ended up with a "net-negative." Fetterman picked a side and moved on.
Democrats have spent months publicly insisting that their 2024 loss was about messaging failures, media ecosystems, or vibes. The leaked autopsy tells a different story. Their own data points to a specific, substantive policy problem that alienated real voters. And rather than confront it, party leaders chose to suppress the finding and share it selectively with activist groups behind closed doors.
This is the same party that lectures the country about transparency, institutional trust, and the sacred duty to keep voters informed. Their commitment to those principles apparently ends the moment the data becomes inconvenient.
The DNC built a report that told them the truth. Then they buried the report. That's not an autopsy. That's a cover-up with better formatting.
