Ilhan Omar faces scrutiny over ties to massive Minnesota welfare fraud

 December 5, 2025, NEWS

A staggering $1 billion in welfare fraud has rocked Minnesota, pulling Democrat Representative Ilhan Omar into a harsh spotlight over her connections to the scandal.

The scope of the fraud, totaling over a billion dollars in stolen public funds, has implicated businesses and individuals closely linked to Omar, as detailed by Breitbart. Her involvement, whether direct or by association, demands a closer look.

Omar hosted events at Safari Restaurant in Minneapolis, a venue tied to the Feeding Our Future scheme that siphoned $250 million in child food aid. Owners Salim Said and Aimee Bock, already convicted, pocketed millions while Omar celebrated her 2018 congressional win at their establishment.

Unpacking Ties to Convicted Fraudsters

Salim Said alone was found guilty of diverting $12 million meant for hungry kids, funds tied to the 2020 MEALS Act that Omar herself championed. That bipartisan bill, meant to feed the vulnerable, instead lined the pockets of those she rubbed shoulders with on camera at that very restaurant.

Beyond the restaurant, Omar’s own campaign official, Guhaad Hashi Said, admitted guilt in running a sham food aid group, Advance Youth Athletic Development, claiming to serve 5,000 children while pocketing $3.2 million. This activist, a fixture in her circle from 2018 to 2020, worked to rally votes in the Somali community while apparently gaming the system.

Donations further muddy the waters, with Omar returning $7,400 in 2022 from convicted fraudsters tied to these schemes. Yet she insists she saw nothing, knew nothing, and played no role in the sprawling theft of public trust.

Omar’s Defense Raises Eyebrows

In a recent New York Times op-ed, Omar pushed back against criticism, stating, “He fails to realize how deeply Somali Americans love this country.” Her words aim to paint a rosy picture, but they sidestep the ugly reality of fraud and the hard questions about accountability.

She went on to decry President Trump’s sharp language, calling out his description of unassimilated Somali migrants as “garbage” and accusing him of “dehumanizing” them. Conveniently absent from her defense is any reckoning with the millions allegedly funneled to terror groups like Al-Shabaab by members of that same community.

Omar frames the scrutiny as mere bigotry, arguing that Somali Americans are doctors, teachers, and leaders. That may be true for many, but it doesn’t erase the documented theft of taxpayer dollars on a scale that boggles the mind.

Questions of Accountability Linger

The sheer size of this fraud, over a billion dollars, isn’t a petty crime to be waved away with claims of patriotism or victimhood. It’s a gut punch to every hardworking American who funds these programs expecting they’ll help the truly needy, not enrich connected insiders.

Omar’s proximity to the culprits, from campaign staff to restaurant owners, paints a troubling picture of negligence at best. If she truly knew nothing, then her judgment in allies and causes needs serious examination by voters who deserve better.

Her legislative push for the MEALS Act, while well-intended, became a pipeline for abuse under her watch. That’s not bigotry to point out; it’s a demand for responsibility from someone entrusted with public power.

A Call for Honest Reckoning

Minnesota’s welfare system was exploited on a historic level, and Omar’s repeated denials strain credulity given her documented ties. This isn’t about targeting a community; it’s about ensuring no one, regardless of background, gets a pass on betraying the public.

Trump’s rhetoric may sting, but the focus should stay on the facts: stolen funds, convicted associates, and unanswered questions. Omar’s op-ed deflects with emotion, yet the cold numbers of a billion dollars demand a response rooted in reality.

Taxpayers deserve transparency, not platitudes about love for country while millions vanish into fraud and, allegedly, terror financing. If Omar wants trust, she must face this scandal head-on, not hide behind accusations of bias while the truth festers.
