Omar stands by controversial ICE criticism despite corrected report

 September 25, 2025, NEWS

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., has doubled down on a fiery call to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) based on a story that’s since been walked back by the very outlet that published it.

Fox News reported that in a whirlwind of events, Omar seized on an NBC News post claiming ICE agents used a 5-year-old autistic girl as a pressure tactic against her father in Massachusetts, only for the narrative to unravel when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) denied the account and NBC issued a correction, while Omar’s original post remains untouched amidst a separate violent attack on an ICE facility in Dallas.

Last week in Leominster, Massachusetts, a video captured by Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra showed a young girl, described as autistic by her family, sitting near a law enforcement vehicle surrounded by officers. The initial NBC News caption on X suggested ICE agents deliberately held the child outside her home to coerce her father, Edwards Hip Mejia, into surrendering. It was a shocking claim that spread like wildfire.

Omar's Swift and Unyielding Reaction

On Tuesday, Omar took to X with a blistering response, calling the reported actions “vile” and demanding the complete dissolution of ICE. “This is vile and beyond cruel. Abolish ICE,” she declared, in a post that’s still live as of Thursday morning despite the evolving story.

Here’s the rub: while Omar’s outrage might resonate with her base, it’s built on a foundation that’s crumbled faster than a house of cards in a windstorm. NBC deleted its original post after DHS pushed back hard, and a corrected version clarified that the video merely showed ICE agents with the child during an attempted arrest of her father. No evidence of using the girl as “bait” was substantiated.

DHS didn’t mince words in setting the record straight about Mejia’s actions during the incident. According to their account, Mejia ignored emergency lights signaling him to pull over, sped home, abandoned his daughter in the car, and bolted inside after a defiant gesture to officers. It’s a far cry from the initial narrative of heartless agents exploiting a vulnerable child.

DHS Denies Allegations of Misconduct

Adding to the DHS response, spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin stated, “ICE agents NEVER used a 5-year-old girl as ‘bait.’” She painted a picture of a father prioritizing evasion over his child’s safety, leaving officers to step in and ensure the girl’s well-being by involving local police.

Meanwhile, the girl’s mother can be heard in the video pleading with officers, emphasizing her daughter’s condition and demanding her return. It’s a gut-wrenching scene for any parent to imagine, no matter where you stand on immigration policy. But the question remains—does this emotional moment justify a blanket condemnation of an entire agency?

Let’s not forget that NBC’s correction shifted the story significantly, admitting their initial characterization was off-base. Yet, Omar’s post stands firm, with no update or clarification as of Thursday morning. Fox News Digital reached out to her office and campaign for comment on whether she’d amend her stance, but the silence is deafening.

Separate ICE Incident Raises Stakes

As if this controversy wasn’t enough, a separate and tragic event unfolded on Wednesday in Dallas, Texas, where a gunman opened fire on an ICE facility. The attack left one detainee dead and two others critically injured, with DHS suggesting the shooter’s actions were driven by animosity toward the agency. It’s a stark reminder of the real-world tensions surrounding ICE’s mission.

Back to Omar’s post—her call to abolish ICE might play well in progressive circles, but it sidesteps the messy reality of enforcing immigration laws in a broken system. Critics could argue it’s easy to sling hashtags from Capitol Hill, but harder to propose workable solutions for border security and humanitarian concerns.

Consider the optics here: a corrected story, a denied narrative, and a congresswoman standing by her words without a peep of revision. It’s the kind of stubbornness that fuels distrust in public discourse, especially when emotions run high on issues like family separation and law enforcement tactics.

Balancing Emotion with Policy Realities

Make no mistake, the video of a young girl surrounded by officers tugs at the heartstrings, and any parent would feel for the mother’s distress. But leaping from a disputed incident to dismantling an entire federal agency seems like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. Where’s the nuance?

On the flip side, ICE isn’t above scrutiny—its operations often spark fierce debate over methods and priorities. Yet, with DHS claiming the father’s reckless behavior put his own child at risk, the story isn’t as black-and-white as social media outrage might suggest. A little humility in updating a post could go a long way.

Ultimately, this saga underscores the dangers of rushing to judgment in a 24-hour news cycle, especially on divisive topics like immigration enforcement. Omar’s unwavering stance might rally her supporters, but it risks alienating those who crave a more measured conversation. Perhaps it’s time to step back, reassess the facts, and focus on policies that address root causes rather than inflame tensions.
