Texas deputies apprehend armed suspect in suspected ambush plot

 September 24, 2025, NEWS

A tense encounter in Humble, Texas, unfolded as Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies narrowly escaped what could have been a deadly trap. Their quick response to a service call turned into a life-saving moment when an armed suspect’s weapon malfunctioned at a critical juncture.

According to Breitbart Texas, the incident occurred in the dark of night in a suburb northeast of Houston, where a man dressed entirely in black opened fire on arriving deputies from a wooded area. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez suspects this was a deliberate attempt to ambush the officers responding to what may have been a fabricated call.

The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Kenyon Levor Coleman, had positioned himself with a chair in the woods, armed with a rifle and a significant stash of ammunition. When he fired on the deputies, fate intervened as his weapon jammed, preventing further shots and giving the officers a crucial window to react.

Swift Action in a Dangerous Moment

Coleman’s inability to clear the jammed rifle forced him to abandon his position and flee into the surrounding woods. Deputies pursued him on foot, undeterred by the initial gunfire, determined to bring the situation under control.

After a chase through the dense area, the officers successfully apprehended Coleman without further incident. They also recovered the rifle, later identified in photos as appearing to be an AK-47, with a spent shell casing visibly stuck in the ejection port.

Sheriff Gonzalez noted in a social media post that the call for service might have been a fake or swatting attempt, designed to lure deputies into harm’s way. It’s a chilling reminder of the risks law enforcement faces daily, especially when predators exploit trust in emergency systems to set deadly traps.

A Troubling History with Firearms

Court records reveal Coleman’s prior brush with the law, having been arrested in March 2023 on a felony charge related to possessing an unregistered machine gun. That charge was dismissed due to insufficient evidence, a decision that raises questions about gaps in holding repeat offenders accountable.

In compliance with legal obligations, a judge ordered the return of the firearm, described as an AK-47, along with body armor, ballistic plates, and ammunition in March 2024. Seeing a similar weapon involved in this recent ambush attempt suggests a pattern that can’t be ignored, even if the system followed protocol.

Sheriff Gonzalez’s photos of the scene show a chair strategically placed at the edge of the woods, painting a picture of premeditation. When someone gears up with tactical equipment and waits in the shadows for law enforcement, it’s hard to see this as anything but a calculated threat to public safety.

Relief Amid Unanswered Questions

Thankfully, no deputies were injured during this harrowing encounter, a fact Sheriff Gonzalez emphasized with evident relief. Coleman was taken into custody, though jail records have yet to confirm his booking status at the time of reporting.

The sheriff admitted uncertainty about Coleman’s motives, stating he does not know why the suspect opened fire on arriving officers. Yet, the setup, from the all-black attire to the stockpile of ammunition, speaks volumes about intent, even if the ‘why’ remains elusive for now.

This incident shines a light on the unpredictable dangers faced by those who protect our communities, often walking into situations with little to no warning. It also prompts a hard look at how prior legal outcomes might loop back into new threats, leaving one to wonder if more could be done to break such cycles.

Gratitude for a Narrow Escape

As this story unfolds, the overriding sentiment is gratitude that Harris County deputies emerged unscathed from what could have been a tragic outcome. Their courage in pursuing an armed suspect through unfamiliar terrain, after being fired upon, deserves recognition in a culture too quick to criticize law enforcement.

Yet, beneath the relief lies a nagging concern about swatting calls and ambush tactics that exploit the very systems designed to save lives. If this was indeed a setup, as Sheriff Gonzalez suspects, it’s a stark warning of how far some will go to undermine order and safety.

Harris County residents, and indeed all who value the thin blue line, should take a moment to appreciate the split-second twists, like a jammed rifle, that sometimes stand between disaster and deliverance. Let’s hope this close call sparks serious discussion on tightening loopholes and protecting those who risk everything to protect us.
