Melania Trump meets Ukraine's first lady at UN event

 September 23, 2025, NEWS

In a moment that could signal a subtle shift in diplomatic tones, First Lady Melania Trump is set to exchange greetings with Olena Zelenska, the wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, today in Washington, New York Post reported.

This brief encounter, happening on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, encapsulates a shared concern for over 20,000 Ukrainian children allegedly abducted by Russia amid the ongoing war, though it lacks the weight of a formal discussion.

Let’s rewind to last month, when President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, carrying a letter from Melania herself, urging peace for the sake of children everywhere.

Melania's Push for Children's Welfare

That gesture wasn’t just symbolic; it underscored Melania’s deep concern about the war’s toll on the youngest victims, a passion she shares with Zelenska, who has been relentless in advocating for these abducted children.

Reports from Ukraine and international watchdogs paint a grim picture—children allegedly kidnapped, some placed for adoption to be raised as Russians, others reportedly forced into military camps to fight against their own homeland.

It’s a gut-wrenching scenario that’s hard to ignore, even for those of us skeptical of endless foreign entanglements; surely, no one can defend turning kids into pawns of war.

Brief Greeting, No Deep Talks

Now, fast forward to today, where Zelenska, after repeated outreach, will finally get a moment with Melania, though don’t expect any grand policy breakthroughs from this quick hello.

“Mrs. Zelensky has reached out several times to set up a meeting, but there’s no bilateral meeting,” said Marc Beckman, a senior adviser to the First Lady, in a recent interview.

“As our First Lady is very polite, she’s going to say hello today, but there’s no sit-down, substantive conversation set,” Beckman added, making it clear this is more courtesy than strategy.

Shared Concerns Over Abducted Children

Still, the optics matter—Zelenska seems to hope Melania’s influence on President Trump could nudge him to lean harder on Putin, especially after Trump’s own public remarks about amicable chats with the Russian leader.

Trump has also acknowledged Melania keeping him updated on Russia’s brutal bombings of civilian areas in Ukraine, a reminder that even in cozy conversations, hard truths can’t be dodged.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, a bipartisan group of U.S. senators pushed legislation to label Russia a state sponsor of terrorism over these child abductions—a move that, frankly, seems overdue to anyone paying attention.

UN Speeches and Parallel Meetings

On the UN stage today, President Trump addressed the General Assembly in Manhattan, taking sharp aim at globalism, mass migration, and climate change policies, sticking to his America-first playbook.

Later, Melania will speak on her Fostering the Future Together initiative, focusing on getting children worldwide access to new technologies—a noble cause, though one wonders if her heart is also with Ukraine’s stolen youth.

As Trump meets with Zelensky today to discuss ending the war, and after mending ties following a tense encounter earlier this year, one can’t help but hope some real pressure on Moscow emerges—especially if allies agree to ramp up sanctions and tariffs, as Trump hinted last month.
