Tom Homan probed for $50,000 payment before Trump DOJ closure

 September 21, 2025, NEWS

Imagine a high-ranking official caught on tape accepting a hefty cash payment, only for the investigation to vanish under a new administration's watch. That's the perplexing situation surrounding Tom Homan, the White House border czar under President Donald Trump, whose alleged actions have sparked serious questions about ethics and political interference.

MSNBC reported that this story centers on Homan being recorded by the FBI accepting $50,000 in cash during an undercover operation, with the probe starting in the summer of 2024 and ultimately being shut down by Trump appointees in early 2025 after the investigation stalled.

Let's rewind to the summer of 2024, when the FBI in western Texas kicked off a probe into Homan after a tip from another case suggested he was seeking payments in exchange for future government contracts.

Undercover agents, posing as business executives, met with Homan and a colleague multiple times, culminating in a recorded transaction on September 20, 2024, where Homan reportedly took the cash while hinting at facilitating contracts if he gained a role in a future administration.

At the time, Homan was running Homeland Strategic Consulting, a firm touting its ability to secure border security contracts, which only adds a layer of suspicion to his dealings.

Investigation Builds, Then Hits a Wall

The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Texas, alongside the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section, built what some officials called a strong case, eyeing charges like conspiracy and bribery based on the recordings.

They planned to keep tabs on Homan to see if he’d follow through on his alleged promises once in office, but those plans never materialized as the investigation ground to a halt.

By early 2025, after Trump’s inauguration, the probe stalled indefinitely, with six sources noting a lack of progress under the new administration.

Trump Appointees Shut Down the Case

In recent weeks, before this story broke, Trump appointees, including FBI Director Kash Patel, officially closed the case after requesting a status update, dismissing it as a relic of a supposed “deep state” agenda.

“This matter originated under the previous administration and was subjected to a full review by FBI agents and Justice Department prosecutors. They found no credible evidence of any criminal wrongdoing,” stated Patel and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in a statement to MSNBC.

But let’s be real—closing a case with recordings of cash changing hands smells more like political housekeeping than justice, especially when the excuse feels like a convenient dodge of accountability.

Homan’s Role and Rising Concerns

Homan, with a three-decade career in border protection, rose through the ranks from a Border Patrol agent to acting head of ICE under Trump’s first term, where he championed the controversial “zero-tolerance” policy.

Named border czar on November 11, 2024, a role skipping Senate confirmation, Homan’s consulting ties to border security firms have Democrats in Congress raising red flags about conflicts of interest, even as he claims to have shuttered his business.

While Homan insists he’s clean and uninvolved in specific contract decisions, the optics of a former consultant turned policy czar accepting cash on tape are tough to shake, and shutting down the probe only fuels the perception of a system protecting its own.
