Trump Fires US Attorney Over James Investigation Controversy

 September 20, 2025, NEWS

In a stunning turn of events, President Donald Trump, the current leader of the United States, has taken decisive action against a key prosecutor. Back in April, Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte called for an FBI probe into New York Attorney General Letitia James over mortgage fraud claims.

New York Post reported that Pulte accused James of manipulating records to secure advantageous loans on properties, including a 2023 purchase in Virginia and a Brooklyn brownstone owned since 2001. Allegedly, she claimed the Norfolk, Va., home as her primary residence while serving in her current role. These are serious charges demanding scrutiny.

James, however, brushed off the accusations as groundless, suggesting they’re part of a retaliatory campaign by President Trump. This comes after she pursued civil fraud charges against him and his business empire, the Trump Organization. The tension between these two figures is palpable.

Allegations Against James Spark Investigation

Erik Siebert, the top prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia, was tasked with examining these allegations against James. Nominated by Trump in May, Siebert had yet to gain Senate confirmation. Despite this, he led the investigation, which has not produced criminal charges to date.

Pressure from the Trump administration reportedly mounted on Siebert over his handling of the case. On Friday, Siebert informed his staff he was stepping down as Interim US Attorney. Hours later, Trump made it clear to reporters in the Oval Office he wanted Siebert gone.

Following Trump’s remarks, Siebert sent an email to his team confirming he had submitted his resignation paperwork. But the president wasn’t done. Just after midnight on Saturday, he took to Truth Social with a bombshell announcement.

Trump Announces Siebert’s Firing on Social Media

President Trump declared: “Today I withdrew the Nomination of Erik Siebert as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, when I was informed that he received the UNUSUALLY STRONG support of the two absolutely terrible, sleazebag Democrat Senators, from the Great State of Virginia.”

How curious that bipartisan support from Virginia Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner became Siebert’s undoing. Shouldn’t a prosecutor’s merit matter more than who backs them? This raises questions about political influence over justice, a concern for many conservatives.

Trump didn’t stop there, asserting Siebert was not a voluntary departure but was terminated by him. The president cited his disillusionment after learning of the Democratic senators’ endorsement. It’s a stark reminder of the administration’s insistence on loyalty in key roles.

New Appointment and Ongoing Case Concerns

Attorney General Pam Bondi has reportedly selected Mary “Maggie” Cleary to step in as acting US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Cleary, previously deputy commonwealth’s attorney in Culpeper County, Va., and a lecturer at the University of Virginia School of Law, called her appointment “unexpected” in a Saturday staff email.

Neither Cleary nor the US Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Virginia provided immediate comments when contacted by The Post. Their silence leaves the public guessing about the direction this case will take. Transparency in such matters remains crucial for trust.

Originally, Siebert was set to confer with Justice Department Special Attorney Ed Martin on Monday to review the status of the investigation into James. With Siebert out, it’s unclear how this meeting will proceed. The case’s momentum hangs in a delicate balance.

Questions of Justice and Political Motives

For conservatives, this saga underscores a deeper issue with political agendas infiltrating legal processes. James’ dismissal of the probe as a “revenge tour” might ring hollow to those who see accountability as non-negotiable. Fairness, not vendettas, should guide such inquiries.

President Trump’s swift action against Siebert also signals a no-nonsense approach to ensuring alignment within his administration. While some may question the timing, others see it as a necessary correction. Justice delayed by political gamesmanship serves no one.

As this story unfolds, the nation watches whether Cleary will steer the investigation with impartiality or face similar pressures. The balance between political influence and legal integrity remains a tightrope. For now, the pursuit of truth in the James case continues under new leadership.
