Trump Responds to Hochul's Backing of Mamdani for NYC Mayor

 September 15, 2025, NEWS

President Donald Trump has dropped a verbal bombshell on New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s surprising endorsement of Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor, signaling that the federal government is keeping a sharp eye on this contentious race.

Breitbart reported that just days ago, Hochul threw her support behind Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, igniting a firestorm of debate within the Democratic Party and beyond.

On Sunday, Hochul took to X and penned a guest essay in the New York Times to announce her backing of Mamdani, framing him as a necessary counterweight to Trump’s influence.

Trump's Stern Warning to Hochul

Trump fired back on Monday with a pointed statement on social media, calling Mamdani a “Liddle Communist” and expressing shock at Hochul’s choice.

“This is a rather shocking development, and a very bad one for New York City,” Trump declared, adding that “Washington will be watching this situation very closely.” His words suggest a clear disapproval of funneling resources into what he sees as a misguided cause.

Let’s be honest—Trump’s reaction isn’t just a tweet; it’s a warning shot that federal scrutiny might follow if Mamdani’s progressive agenda gains traction in the Big Apple.

Hochul's Bold Defense of Mamdani

Hochul, for her part, doubled down, insisting that New York City needs a leader who won’t “surrender one inch” to Trump’s policies.

She praised Mamdani as someone “fearless in confronting the president’s extreme agenda,” painting him as a champion for affordability and safety. While her intentions may resonate with some, this rhetoric risks alienating moderates who see Mamdani’s track record as anything but mainstream.

After all, endorsing a candidate tied to ideas like prison abolition and government-run grocery stores raises eyebrows—how does that square with keeping neighborhoods safe?

Democratic Party Fractures Over Endorsement

The endorsements for Mamdani aren’t limited to Hochul; heavy hitters like Rep. Jamie Raskin, Rep. Pat Ryan, and Sen. Bernie Sanders have also rallied behind him.

Raskin lauded Mamdani’s “Rooseveltian quality,” while Sanders has even hit the campaign trail with him. But calling someone inspiring doesn’t erase the fact that Mamdani’s vision—think “seizing the means of production”—feels more like a history textbook than a practical policy for today’s New York.

Meanwhile, Rep. Pat Ryan took a swipe at Mamdani’s rival, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, suggesting Trump’s involvement proves Cuomo’s willingness to compromise principles. It’s a spicy jab, but it sidesteps the deeper question of whether Mamdani’s far-left stance is a liability for the party.

Critics Slam Mamdani as Extreme

Not all Democrats are on board—Sen. John Fetterman called out party members embracing socialism as “morons,” warning that Americans reject such systems.

Fetterman also distanced himself from Mamdani, stating he doesn’t “agree with virtually any of it, politically.” When even fellow progressives balk, it’s a sign that Mamdani’s platform might be more divisive than unifying.

Adding fuel to the fire, Rep. Laura Gillen and Mayor Eric Adams labeled Mamdani “too extreme to lead,” with Adams going as far as calling him a “snake oil salesman.” That’s a brutal critique from within the party, hinting that Mamdani’s rhetoric might promise miracles but deliver chaos.
