Attorney General Bondi oversees major D.C. crime sweep

 August 18, 2025, NEWS

Sixty-eight suspects were rounded up in a single night in Washington, D.C., as part of a sweeping crime crackdown under President Donald Trump’s direct oversight.

According to Breitbart News, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the arrests on Sunday, highlighting the aggressive push to restore order in the nation’s capital. This is just the tip of the iceberg in a broader operation that’s already netted hundreds.

Bondi took to social media to detail the haul, stating, “Just last night, our federal and DC law enforcement partners made 68 arrests and seized 15 illegal firearms.” Homicide suspects and drug traffickers are among those charged, a clear signal that the days of unchecked lawlessness might finally be numbered.

Trump Takes Charge of D.C. Policing

On August 11, Trump made a decisive move, invoking Section 740 of the D.C. Home Rule Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control. He didn’t stop there, activating the National Guard to bolster the effort against rampant crime.

Bondi followed up on Monday with more numbers, noting, “Just this weekend, 137 arrests were made and 21 illegal firearms were seized.” With nearly 400 total arrests so far, the message is unmistakable: the capital won’t be a safe haven for criminals any longer.

While some might argue this oversteps local autonomy, the reality on D.C.’s streets has been grim for too long. Federal intervention, though heavy-handed to critics, appears to be delivering results where local policies have stumbled.

Resistance Emerges Amid Crackdown Success

The very next day after Trump’s announcement, protests flared up along the 14th Street Northwest corridor, with residents and activists pushing back. Shouts of “Go home, fascists” and “Get off our streets” echoed as federal checkpoints were established.

These displays of dissent, while predictable, gloss over the undeniable spike in violence that necessitated such drastic measures. Frustration with federal overreach is understandable, but ignoring the chaos that’s plagued D.C. helps no one.

Some Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have voiced opposition to Trump’s tactics. Yet, when sidewalks are battlegrounds, bold action often trumps endless debate.

Shifting Policies on Sanctuary Status

In a striking turn, Washington, D.C., long a sanctuary jurisdiction, is now cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement under this new federal directive. This shift comes just days after Trump assumed control of the local police force.

For years, critics have argued that sanctuary policies shield lawbreakers under the guise of compassion, often at the expense of public safety. This policy reversal could be a game-changer if it holds, cutting through ideological fog with pragmatic enforcement.

Bondi’s pledge to “make DC safe again” isn’t just rhetoric; it’s backed by hard numbers and visible action. Skeptics may scoff, but nearly 400 arrests suggest the needle is moving in the right direction.

Balancing Order with Community Trust

As the crackdown continues, the challenge will be maintaining this momentum without alienating the very communities law enforcement aims to protect. Heavy-handed tactics can breed resentment, even if the intent is to curb violence.

Still, with 21 illegal firearms off the streets in a single weekend, it’s hard to deny the immediate impact of Trump’s strategy. The capital has long needed a firm hand to address its crime epidemic, and for now, that hand is federal.

Ultimately, safety isn’t a partisan issue, though solutions often are. If this operation can sustain its early success while addressing local concerns, D.C. might finally see the stability its residents deserve.
