Angel Mom Challenges Senator's Immigration Query at Border Hearing

 July 23, 2025, NEWS

Picture this: a grieving mother, whose daughter was tragically taken by a violent crime, standing up to a senator’s loaded question in a heated Senate hearing on immigration policy.

In a fiery Senate Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on immigration held on a recent Tuesday, Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla of California sparred with panelists, including Tammy Nobles, a mother advocating for justice after her daughter’s murder by an unauthorized migrant, Fox News reported.

The clash unfolded as Padilla posed a question to the panel, including Nobles and Marie Vega, another grieving mother, asking them to raise a hand if they believed all immigrants are criminals.

Grieving Mothers Face Tough Questions

Nobles, whose 20-year-old daughter Kayla Hamilton was killed in July 2022 by an MS-13 gang member who had entered the country unlawfully, didn’t let the question go unchallenged.

She fired back and asked, “Are you talking about legal immigrants or regular immigrants?” That’s one way to cut through the political fog—force the senator to define his terms before anyone gets painted with a broad brush.

Marie Vega also spoke out, sharing her pain as she recounted how an unauthorized migrant murdered her son, Javier “Harvey” Vega Jr., a Border Patrol agent, during a previous Democratic administration in 2014—underscoring that this issue spans multiple presidencies.

Senator’s Defense Sparks More Debate

Sen. Padilla pushed back against criticism of Democratic policies, claiming that the narrative of lax enforcement under such administrations is a misrepresentation of their priorities.

He argued, “That’s simply not true.” But when the rhetoric of “going after criminals” feels like a talking point while families like Nobles’ suffer, it’s hard to see this as anything but a polished defense of a flawed system.

Padilla also pointed to an immigration official’s testimony during the hearing, asserting that ICE agents have not been discouraged from enforcing the law under the current administration—a claim that might ring hollow to those who’ve seen enforcement gaps firsthand.

Angel Mom Calls Out Question Tactics

The very next day, Nobles appeared on a morning news program and unpacked the hearing, expressing her belief that Padilla had designed his question to ensnare the panelists into a misstep.

She said, “I think he was trying to trap us.” And honestly, when a senator delivers a question that feels more like a gotcha moment than a genuine search for truth, it’s no wonder people trust these hearings about as much as a campaign promise.

Meanwhile, another panelist, Alejandro Barranco, a U.S. Marine veteran, offered a different perspective. He shared that ICE detained his father—an unauthorized migrant—last month in California under questionable circumstances, and he alleged racial profiling in the process.

Personal Stories Highlight Policy Divides

Barranco passionately defended his father’s contributions, saying, “My father, like so many others, deserves a fair chance.” It’s a heartfelt plea, but when public safety collides with personal stories, the immigration debate only gets messier, leaving policymakers stuck in a quagmire of competing priorities.

Meanwhile, Nobles continues to advocate for the Kayla Hamilton Act, a legislative proposal by a South Carolina Republican aimed at strengthening federal oversight of unaccompanied minors—a direct response to the tragedy that claimed her daughter’s life, and a reminder that policy must address real human costs over political posturing.
