The nation's largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, released its latest annual report during Mother's Day weekend, sparking renewed debates about federal funding allocations.
According to Breitbart, the organization's 2023-2024 report titled "A Force For Hope" reveals they performed 402,230 abortions while receiving $792.2 million in taxpayer money, representing increases in both metrics from the previous year.
The timing of this report coincides with congressional Republicans' efforts to defund abortion providers through budget reconciliation, which would allow them to bypass the Senate's 60-vote requirement. This move comes as the organization faces scrutiny over its expanding abortion services while some health services show declining numbers.
The $792.2 million in taxpayer funding marks a nearly $100 million increase from the previous reporting period. Although the Hyde Amendment prohibits direct federal funding for abortions, critics argue that any government support for abortion providers should be eliminated.
Live Action's analysis shows that Planned Parenthood represents only nine out of 86 Title X grant recipients. However, the organization is estimated to perform about 40 percent of all U.S. abortions, based on the Guttmacher Institute's 2024 projection of 1,038,100 total procedures.
The organization's net assets and total liabilities reached an unprecedented $3.1 billion, while private revenue decreased by 31 percent to $684 million. The excess revenue over expenses also dropped significantly by 85 percent to $27.4 million.
Planned Parenthood reported increases in some services, with prenatal care rising 11 percent to 7,008 cases and adoption referrals growing 25 percent to reach 2,100. The total number of clients increased by 1.5 percent to 2.08 million.
However, several key health services experienced notable declines. Cancer screenings decreased by 8 percent, with breast screenings and Pap tests dropping by 10 and 12 percent, respectively. STI testing and treatment services fell by 11 percent, while contraceptive services showed a slight decline of just over 1 percent.
The organization continues to challenge abortion restrictions across multiple states and is currently involved in approximately 30 legal cases.
As the second-largest provider of gender-affirming care in the country, Planned Parenthood offers these services through 41 of its 49 affiliates. The organization includes these treatments under the broader category of "other procedures," which also encompasses various health services.
The "other procedures" category shows significant fluctuations over recent years, dropping from about 257,000 in 2021 to approximately 78,000 in the current report. This categorization method has drawn criticism for potentially obscuring the actual numbers of specific services provided.
Live Action notes that this reporting approach makes it difficult to track service-specific trends accurately over time.
The release of Planned Parenthood's annual report reflects the organization's evolving role in American healthcare while highlighting ongoing controversies about federal funding for abortion providers. The report shows record-breaking abortion numbers and increased taxpayer funding, even as some health services decline and Republicans in Congress pursue defunding efforts through budget reconciliation. The organization continues its legal battles against abortion restrictions while maintaining its position as a major provider of various health services, including gender-affirming care.
