This investigation comes after a report from the Economic Policy Innovation Center (EPIC) that accused California of funneling billions of federal taxpayer dollars to illegal immigrants. EPIC’s findings claim California uses its Medicaid provider taxes to send nearly $4 billion in state funding to provide healthcare and other benefits for illegal immigrants. More concerning, according to the report, the federal government will reimburse California \$19 billion from April 2023 through December 2026—without requiring the state to contribute a penny from its own budget.

The allegations hit hard, and his team failed to offer a compelling response while facing accusations of misusing federal funds. EPIC’s report also accuses California of using those funds to expand Medicaid benefits for illegal immigrants and to provide long-term care for the wealthy. These claims portray the state government as one that uses taxpayer dollars to fund a wide range of services—not just for non-citizens, but also for the elite—while leaving hardworking Americans to fend for themselves.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem isn’t holding back in her criticism of California’s approach. “Radical left politicians in California prioritize illegal aliens over our citizens,” she said. She went on to question why the state is giving cash benefits to people who shouldn’t be here in the first place. In response to this growing concern, Noem issued a warning to illegal immigrants: “If you are an illegal immigrant, you should leave now.
