US military campaign targets Houthi positions in the Red Sea

 April 28, 2025, NEWS

The waters of the Red Sea have recently become the focal point of a significant U.S. military operation.

Since mid-March, the Operation Rough Rider has targeted over 800 Houthi-affiliated sites, fundamentally disrupting their military capabilities, Fox News reported.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) launched Operation Rough Rider on March 15, hitting a vast array of targets associated with the Houthi terrorist group in the Red Sea region. This strategic move was designed to cripple the group's ability to conduct terrorism activities and ensure safer international maritime navigation.

Decisive Impact on Houthi Military Infrastructure

The operation has led to the demolition of critical Houthi military infrastructures such as their command centers and air defense systems. Moreover, key locations used for manufacturing weapons and storing missiles and drones were also obliterated.

This intense military action has resulted in the death of hundreds of Houthi fighters, including key members of their leadership who were instrumental in their missile and UAV operations.

The effect of the strikes is evident from the significant reductions in the group’s aggressive undertakings. There has been a 69% decrease in ballistic missile launches and a 55% reduction in drone attacks since the inception of the operation.

Strategic Losses and Ongoing Debates

Ras Isa Port, a crucial node in the Houthi logistics and funding network, was among the destroyed targets, delivering a blow to the group's resource acquisitions.

While the operation has been strategically successful, it has also led to an accelerated depletion of U.S. munitions stockpiles, amounting to over $1 billion in operational costs. This rapid consumption of resources has raised concerns amongst U.S. officials and strategists about the campaign's sustainability.

In Sanaa, Yemen, pro-Houthi protests were sparked on the same day the operation began, indicating the local and regional dissent against the U.S. military actions. The U.S. has responded by reinforcing its military presence in the affected regions, deploying two aircraft carriers along with various new military units to maintain pressure on the Houthis.

Operational Security and Political Repercussions

A spokesperson from CENTCOM emphasized the discreet nature of their operations. To preserve operational security, CENTCOM has intentionally limited disclosing details of their ongoing or future operations. As per CENTCOM, the U.S. military is very deliberate in its operational approach but will not reveal specifics about what they’ve done or what they will do.

However, not everyone agrees with the ongoing military strategy. Vice President JD Vance expressed his reservations about the operation’s long-term benefits, suggesting that the approach might not be yielding sustainable results.

The critics, including some lawmakers, continue to debate whether these efforts are effectively deterring the Houthis long-term or merely providing a temporary setback to their operations. The U.S. military vows to intensify pressure until it achieves its main objectives of restoring freedom of navigation and reinforcing American deterrence in the region. This commitment underscores the strategic importance of the Red Sea as a global maritime corridor and highlights the need to secure it from terrorist exploits.

Operation Rough Rider marks a pivotal moment in U.S. military operations in the Middle East, showing a robust response aimed at securing vital international waters and curbing terrorism. While the strikes have impaired Houthi military capacities and reduced the frequency of their attacks, the long-term effectiveness and sustainability of such military engagements continue to be a subject of vigorous discussion. This operation not only reflects the complexities of modern geopolitical conflicts but also highlights the global stakes involved in securing maritime routes.
