A political storm erupts in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, as a local magistrate judge's resignation reveals an unexpected connection to a Venezuelan gang member.

According to Breitbart, Democrat Judge Joel Cano resigned from his position after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents discovered Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, an alleged member of the Tren de Aragua gang, living in a casita behind his residence.

The 23-year-old Venezuelan national entered the United States illegally through Eagle Pass, Texas, in December 2023. Due to overcrowded detention facilities during the peak of the border crisis, authorities released him on immigration parole just three days after his entry. The situation took an alarming turn when federal prosecutors found evidence linking Ortega-Lopez to the hyperviolent Venezuelan gang recently designated as a foreign terrorist organization by President Trump and the State Department.

Judge's involvement raises serious concerns

Judge Cano, who previously served as a police officer, permitted Ortega-Lopez to use his residential address for immigration relief requests. Social media evidence revealed photos of the judge posing with the foreign national, deepening questions about their relationship. Nancy Cano, the judge's wife, had offered Ortega-Lopez accommodation after he performed construction and handyman work for her.

Federal investigators uncovered disturbing evidence on Ortega-Lopez's cell phone, including graphic images of decapitated and mutilated bodies. The investigation also revealed social media posts showing the suspect at a shooting range, handling multiple firearms including AR-15-style rifles and semi-automatic pistols.

The case gained additional complexity when authorities discovered firearms in a neighboring property owned by Nancy Cano's daughter. Witnesses confirmed seeing Ortega-Lopez in possession of several of these weapons.

Firearm possession and gang affiliations

Law enforcement officials documented Ortega-Lopez's extensive involvement with firearms, including videos showing him operating an AR-15 equipped with a suppressor. The suspect demonstrated proficiency with the weapon, emptying and reloading magazines while being recorded.

Investigators identified distinctive Tren de Aragua gang tattoos on Ortega-Lopez's body through the photos and videos obtained during the investigation. The gang's recent designation as a Transnational Criminal Organization by the U.S. government adds severity to the case.

The Venezuelan national's journey from Eagle Pass led him to El Paso, where he initially shared accommodation with five others before connecting with the Canos. This arrangement would later prove crucial in the investigation.

Legal proceedings and potential consequences

Ortega-Lopez currently faces charges of illegal alien firearm possession at the Dona Ana County Detention Center. The case has drawn significant attention due to its implications for judicial integrity and border security.

Questions remain regarding potential legal consequences for Judge Cano and his wife Nancy. Authorities have not yet announced whether they will face charges related to harboring an illegal alien or providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

Their involvement with Ortega-Lopez has sparked discussions about the responsibilities of public officials and the broader implications of immigration enforcement.

Current state of the investigation

The arrest of Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, an alleged member of the Tren de Aragua gang, at Judge Joel Cano's property has led to the Democratic judge's resignation from the Dona Ana County magistrate position. Federal prosecutors are pursuing charges against Ortega-Lopez for illegal firearm possession while investigations continue regarding the extent of the Canos' involvement in harboring the Venezuelan national. The case highlights ongoing challenges in border security and raises questions about the accountability of public officials in immigration matters.
