Walz critiques Trump’s tariff strategy, acknowledging U.S. manufacturing issues

 April 6, 2025

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz recently voiced his concerns over President Donald Trump's strategies for revitalizing the U.S. manufacturing sector.

While agreeing with Trump about the detrimental impact of offshoring on manufacturing, Walz critiqued the use of tariffs as an ineffective solution, the Hill reported.

Governor Walz spoke during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” where he expressed his views on the ongoing issues plaguing the manufacturing industry.

He admitted alignment with President Trump’s observation that significant manufacturing capabilities had been hollowed out due to offshoring strategies adopted in recent decades.

Discrepancy in Approaches to Reviving Manufacturing

Governor Walz criticized President Trump’s reliance on tariffs to mend the manufacturing sector’s woes. Despite aligning with United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain on the impact of deindustrialization, Walz diverged significantly on the method of approach. Walz acknowledged that while targeted tariffs, like those on steel, might be beneficial, a broad application is misguided.

Shawn Fain, the President of the United Auto Workers, argued in favor of Trump’s tariffs, pointing out their potential benefits for the working class. He praised the shift from previous policies that prioritized corporate interests over those of workers. Despite Fain’s support, Governor Walz was cautious about endorsing a widespread tariff strategy.

Broader Economic Policies Discussed

The Governor from Minnesota also expanded his critique beyond tariffs, addressing broader economic policies and their impact on the working class. He touched upon the Democrats' response, suggesting that their failure to propose effective solutions could be alienating voters.

During his interview, Walz stated: Here’s the thing that the Democrats have to figure out. Donald Trump’s language around this, he’s not wrong that we have had manufacturing gutted. He’s not wrong that we saw an outsourcing. People of my generation were told there aren’t going to be any manufacturing jobs, so you need to go to college and rack up student loan debt.

The problem is, Donald Trump’s solution to this is not the solution, Walz added further during the discussion, pointing towards the complexity of issues that require more nuanced solutions than mere tariffs.

Clashing Views Between Local Governance and Federal Policies

Walz also mirrored some of Shawn Fain’s rhetoric, which underscored the decades of economic decisions that may not have favored American workers. However, he delineated his stand by dismissing the tariff approach as a comprehensive solution. By stating his disagreement with Fain on this particular aspect, Walz underscored a crucial divergence in the discussion about America’s economic revival.

Donald Trump talks about the things that are real in the angst of people’s lives. He doesn’t do a damn thing about it. He does just the opposite. And he pals around with the people that caused the problem, Walz noted during his discussion about President Trump's policies.

Walz’s dialogue on CNN moved beyond mere critique to a call for reassessment within his party and across the political spectrum regarding economic policies affecting every American worker.

It becomes clear through Governor Tim Walz’s discussion that while he agrees on the diagnosis of issues within the U.S. manufacturing sector, he starkly opposes the prescribed remedies offered by President Donald Trump. Walz advocates for a revisiting of broader economic strategies, highlighting a deep need for a cohesive policy that truly addresses the roots of economic disparity and restores the dignity of American manufacturing without resorting to strategies he views as simplistic and potentially detrimental.
