Uday Al Rabay, a 22-year-old Palestinian from the Gaza Strip, reportedly suffered a tragic fate at the hands of Hamas.
Following his involvement in an anti-Hamas demonstration, Al Rabay was allegedly tortured and killed, the New York Post reported.
This incident occurred after Uday Al Rabay participated in a protest against Hamas, which has controlled Gaza since 2006. Growing discontent with Hamas, following the breakdown of a two-month cease-fire with Israel, sparked the protest, one of several recent demonstrations.
The attackers reportedly beat Uday for four hours, leading to his death. After the assault, they left his swollen and bloodied body at his family’s doorstep, supposedly as a grim warning to others contemplating dissent against Hamas. Pictures of Uday's battered body quickly spread across social media, including on Telegram, eliciting shock and condemnation among the Gaza populace and beyond.
According to Mazen Shat, a police officer affiliated with the Fatah party and a critic of Hamas, this brutal act was a clear message from Hamas to intimidate those who might speak out against their governance. Uday was martyred by the criminals of Hamas. And what’s his crime? He told the truth, because he refused to be silent on injustice, because he did not kneel to Hamas,” Mazen Shat expressed.
Funeral services for Uday took place last Saturday. The event turned into a demonstration, with mourners voicing their opposition to Hamas's rule, a sentiment echoed in chants and slogans.
Street protests and changing public opinions, as documented in a recent poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, reflect these tensions. The poll reveals a significant shift in sentiment among Gazans, many of whom desire an end to ongoing conflicts.
Sam Habeeb, a local activist, commented on the broader social unrest: “People have been under Israeli bombing since October 2023, they don’t want the war to continue by all means. Hamas must accept the fact that the majority of people in Gaza want an end to this war, and certainly, they have the right to express their views freely.”
