Hunter Biden has engaged Dick Harpootlian, a renowned lawyer and former South Carolina senator, to represent him in a new legal challenge.
Hunter Biden, represented by Dick Harpootlian, is initiating a lawsuit against Patrick Byrne, alleging defamation related to accusations of corrupt dealings with Iranian officials, Fox News reported.
Previously handled by lawyer Abbe David Lowell, Hunter's legal affairs are now in the hands of Harpootlian, who has stepped in following Lowell's involvement in a special counsel investigation and a separate gun charge case. Hunter was recently pardoned by President Joe Biden, relating to accusations managed under Lowell's counsel.
This lawsuit accuses Patrick Byrne, the former CEO of Overstock and a known figure in conservative circles, of falsely claiming that Hunter Biden engaged with Iranian officials in 2021 to solicit a bribe to release $8 billion in frozen funds at his father's direction.
Alongside his complicated legal battles, Hunter Biden is dealing with financial ordeals due to decreasing art sales and accumulating debts from past legal expenses, amounting to several million dollars. This financial strain has been compounded by the economic repercussions from Byrne’s claims.
In his lawsuit, Biden claims that Byrne's misleading allegations have undermined his economic opportunities, notably affecting sales from his memoir and art, as well as opportunities for speaking engagements. These activities previously contributed an estimated $500,000 to his income. Now with Dick Harpootlian's representation, Hunter Biden seeks to restore his reputation and secure compensation for the alleged economic harm caused by Byrne's claims.
Dick Harpootlian has had a notable career not only as a lawyer but also as a political figure. Although he recently lost his seat in a close Senate race to Russell Ott, Harpootlian continues to be a prominent legal presence in South Carolina. He exchanged his position in politics for continued fervor in the courtroom.
Discussing his electoral defeat, Harpootlian expressed unwavering support for the democratic process and the integrity of electoral outcomes. "We went through a process… I lost. The process worked. I’m not accusing anybody of stealing anything. I’m not having a temper tantrum. I’m not expressing any doubt in our system," he stated, endorsing the operational nature of political contests.
At CrimeCon 2023, he spoke candidly about his preference for legal work over luxury, emphasizing his commitment to pro-bono work. Dick Harpootlian commented, "What's so astounding about that? We do cases for free all the time."
Meanwhile, Abbe Lowell, the predecessor to Harpootlian in representing Hunter Biden, has been entangled in his legal challenges. He faces a $20 million defamation lawsuit from IRS whistleblowers Gary Shapley Jr. and Joseph Ziegler, further complicating the legal landscape.
Lowell has been critical of the Republican lawmakers' handling of their investigations into Hunter Biden, particularly pointing out their failure to produce evidence. Discussing the 2024 deposition, Lowell remarked, "They have produced no evidence that would do anything to support the notion that there were any financial transactions that involved Hunter with his father. Period."
In a recent critique regarding the attention on Hunter's challenges rather than pertinent legal and financial inquiries, Lowell stated, "It seems to me that the Republican members wanted to spend more time talking about my client's addiction than they could ask any question that had anything to do with what they call their impeachment inquiry."
As these legal proceedings unfold, Hunter Biden's change in legal representation marks a new chapter in his attempt to tackle both his public and personal challenges. Dick Harpootlian's extensive experience and strong legal acumen will influence how the defamation case against Patrick Byrne progresses and what implications it will have for both parties involved.
