A motorcyclist tragically lost his life after falling into a sudden sinkhole in Seoul, South Korea.
According to People, A large sinkhole appeared in the Korean capital, resulting in the death of a motorcyclist during his evening commute.
The victim, identified as 34-year-old Mr. Park, was riding his motorcycle near Daemyeong Elementary School in the Myeongil-dong area of Gangdong-gu when the road beneath him collapsed. This incident occurred at around 6:29 p.m. on March 24, 2025.
The rescue operation involved 40 personnel and took 17 hours to complete. Unfortunately, Mr. Park was found deceased due to cardiac arrest at approximately 11:22 a.m. the following day. Rescue efforts were significantly hindered by environmental conditions. Nearby construction had led to soil and water seeping into the sinkhole, complicating the extraction process.
The sinkhole's sudden appearance was captured by a dashcam from a nearby vehicle. The footage showed Mr. Park's motorcycle disappearing into the ground as a car ahead narrowly escaped the same fate.
Following the accident, local authorities closed several nearby schools, including Seoul Daemyeong Elementary, Hanyoung Middle and High Schools, and Hanyoung Foreign Language High School. These measures were taken to ensure the safety of students and staff until the area could be deemed secure.
Another motorist, Mr. Heo, aged 48, was also affected by the incident. He drove his white van through the intersection shortly before the collapse and sustained minor injuries.
A Gangdong Fire Station official described the complexities faced during the rescue, saying, "It was only after draining the area and deploying heavy equipment to remove the soil that we were able to locate the man."
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has launched a thorough investigation into the cause of the sinkhole. They have stated that a connection to recent subway construction activities has not been ruled out.
An official from the Seoul Metropolitan Government emphasized their commitment to understanding all contributing factors, stating, "We are not ruling out a connection to the subway construction. We will need to conduct a detailed assessment before we can determine the exact cause."
