An Oscar-winning Palestinian filmmaker became entangled in a violent confrontation with Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank village of Susiya on Monday.
According to NewsNation, Hamdan Ballal, co-director of the documentary "No Other Land," was reportedly beaten by Israeli settlers before being detained by the Israeli military, along with two other Palestinians.
The incident occurred shortly after residents broke their Ramadan fast when approximately two dozen settlers, some masked and armed, stormed the village. Witnesses reported that soldiers who arrived at the scene pointed their weapons at Palestinians while settlers continued their assault with stones.
"No Other Land" achieved international recognition by securing the Academy Award for best documentary this year. The film documents the struggles of Masafer Yatta residents against Israeli military demolitions of their villages. The collaborative Palestinian-Israeli production has garnered numerous accolades since its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2024.
Basel Adra, another co-director who witnessed the incident, expressed concerns about increasing attacks following their Oscar success. According to his account, settlers targeted Ballal's home while soldiers fired shots into the air.
Basel Adra stated:
We came back from the Oscars and every day since there is an attack on us. This might be their revenge on us for making the movie. It feels like a punishment.
The Israeli military claims they detained three Palestinians suspected of throwing rocks at forces during a "violent confrontation." They also reported detaining one Israeli civilian and evacuating another who required medical attention.
Attorney Lea Tsemel, representing the detained Palestinians, revealed that authorities informed her the detainees were being held at a military base for medical treatment. However, she has been unable to establish contact or determine their whereabouts.
Josh Kimelman, an activist with the Center for Jewish Nonviolence, reported that 10-20 masked settlers attacked activists, damaging their vehicles and forcing them to flee. Video evidence shows a masked settler physically confronting activists before they rushed to their damaged vehicles.
The West Bank, captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war, houses over 500,000 Israeli settlers across more than 100 settlements. The region's 3 million Palestinians live under Israeli military rule, with limited administration by the Palestinian Authority.
