Homan Criticizes Biden’s Border Strategy

 March 17, 2025

A recent conversation between former Border Patrol chief Tom Homan and sports commentator Stephen A. Smith delves into controversial immigration policy changes.

According to The Daily Caller, Homan alleged that former President Joe Biden deliberately reversed successful immigration policies, suggesting potential political motivations behind the administration's border strategy.

During his appearance on "The Stephen A. Smith Show," Homan drew comparisons between the Obama and Biden administrations' handling of immigration.

He emphasized that both Biden and former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas had firsthand experience with Obama-era immigration policies, which included stricter enforcement measures and higher deportation rates.

Obama era policies versus Biden administration approach

Smith highlighted the stark contrast between Obama's immigration enforcement record and Biden's policy decisions. The discussion revealed that Obama's administration had implemented more aggressive deportation measures compared to Trump's presidency.

Homan explained that during the Obama years, the administration established family residential centers and ensured immigrants appeared before judges. This systematic approach resulted in approximately 90% of cases ending in deportation, effectively reducing border crossings.

The former Border Patrol chief pointed out that despite having direct knowledge of these successful strategies, Biden and Mayorkas chose to implement contradictory policies upon taking office.

Political strategy behind policy changes

Homan shared his perspective on the motives behind these policy shifts. He cited Biden's reversal of Trump's census rule as particularly significant.

The policy change allows for counting undocumented immigrants in sanctuary cities during the census. This modification could potentially alter congressional representation by increasing House seats in Democratic-leaning areas.

Homan said:

I think this administration thought these millions of people are gonna be future Democratic voters, but one of the things Biden also did, in addition to destroying all the programs we put in place to give us the most secure border, he overturned the Trump census rule, which means millions of people that they released in sanctuary cities will be counted in the next census.

Border security concerns and enforcement efforts

The discussion touched on Mayorkas's repeated assurances about border security. However, Border Patrol data revealed millions of illegal immigrant encounters since the 2021 fiscal year began.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has reportedly intensified its deportation operations. Current efforts are said to be operating at three times the rate of the previous administration.

These developments occur against the backdrop of ongoing debates about the effectiveness of various border security measures and their broader implications for American politics.

Understanding the immigration policy shift

The conversation between Homan and Smith exposed significant changes in U.S. immigration enforcement strategy from 2020 to 2025. Former Border Patrol chief Tom Homan's appearance on Stephen A. Smith's show revealed how the Biden administration deliberately reversed previous successful immigration policies, potentially aiming to influence future electoral outcomes through census counting and voter demographics. The discussion highlighted the contrast between Obama-era deportation policies and Biden's approach while also addressing concerns about border security and enforcement efforts.
