Senate Democrats are demanding a formal investigation of a White House event involving President Donald Trump and businessman Elon Musk, which featured Tesla vehicles prominently.
According to the Hill, the lawmakers are concerned that the event might have flouted federal ethics regulations against using government roles for private endorsements, as Tesla vehicles owned by Musk were showcased.
Senators Adam Schiff, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, and Richard Blumenthal reached out to the acting director of the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) to raise their concerns about the matter. They suggest that Musk, aided by Trump, might have leveraged his government position for Tesla’s advantage. There's an assertion that even though federal law exempts the president from prohibitions on endorsing products, Musk’s role as a special governmental employee doesn’t entirely shield him from these regulations.
The event in question saw Trump announce his intention to purchase a Tesla vehicle, highlighting its quality and the efforts of Musk, who stood alongside Trump displaying Tesla’s achievements and U.S. manufacturing prowess. Observers likened the event to a promotional car show, raising eyebrows about possible ethical boundaries being crossed.
The senators claim that Musk and Trump used public resources to promote Tesla, which they assert contradicts ethics laws designed to prevent misuse of governmental roles for personal or commercial benefit. “Ethics laws on the misuse of government positions serve a practical purpose,” the senators asserted in their communicated concerns.
The senators wrote that they believe Musk, with President Trump’s encouragement, is exploiting his official role and the resources of the White House to endorse his company. The implications of these actions could warrant a closer look by the Office of Government Ethics.
During the event, Trump stated, “I'm gonna buy because number one, it’s a great product. As good as it gets. Number two, because this man [Elon Musk] has devoted his energy and his life to doing this, and I think he has been treated unfairly.” Musk, emphasizing the American-made aspect of his vehicles, echoed Trump’s praise by highlighting the accolades Tesla cars have garnered.
However, Senate Democrats argue that this show of support from Trump may have skirted too close to an endorsement. They have sought a recommendation from the OGE to pursue an inquiry into Musk's actions and potential rule violations.
