Vice President Vance Visits Bay City to Champion Manufacturing Revival

 March 15, 2025

In a bid to underscore the Trump administration's commitment to revitalizing American industry, Vice President J.D. Vance and U.S. Small Business Administration chief Kelly Loeffler visited Bay City, Michigan, on Friday.

Their visit aimed to promote efforts to return manufacturing jobs to U.S. soil amid public demonstrations, The Daily Caller reported.

Vantage Plastics in Bay City hosted the event, serving as a backdrop for discussions on the resurgence of domestic manufacturing. Vance and Loeffler toured the facility to spotlight the administration's ongoing initiatives aimed at bolstering American industry. The choice of venue highlighted Michigan's industrial landscape and Vantage Plastics' growth supported by a state grant.

Vance Addresses Protesters Outside Event

Outside Vantage's premises, a group of protesters gathered, prompting Vice President Vance to address their presence during his remarks. He attributed the demonstrations to the need for enhanced manufacturing opportunities within the country. Vance linked the aspirations for reviving U.S. manufacturing to reducing unemployment and idle time among citizens.

A $1.2 million grant awarded to Vantage Plastics in 2023 exemplifies efforts to create job opportunities in the region, with an expected 93 new positions. The Trump administration's broader strategy involves imposing tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China to encourage American-based production and manufacturing practices.

To further the industrial discussion, Vance remarked on the protesters, questioning their employment status and underscoring the economic goals of the administration. "We've got this great event, this great facility, great business and of course, great workers and I'm sure all of us saw there were a few protesters outside and I can't be the only person wondering, you know, it's a little after noon on a Friday, and don't you all have jobs?" he questioned.

Office Of Shipbuilding Announced

Meanwhile, the Trump administration announced the creation of a new "Office of Shipbuilding" to revitalize U.S. shipbuilding interests. As part of a wider effort, this move signifies a targeted approach to rejuvenate long-declining sectors in American manufacturing.

February brought a hopeful sign for the administration with the creation of 10,000 new manufacturing jobs. Out of these, 9,000 stemmed from advancements in the automobile industry, reflecting a partial realization of the administration's industrial goals.

Vance's recent encounters with public dissent were not limited to Bay City. Earlier in the week, he faced hecklers during a speech in Washington, D.C., and received mixed responses at a symphony event at the JFK Center.

Vance's Broader Industrial Message

Vance, addressing economic and manufacturing concerns, emphasized the need for policy measures to shift U.S. jobs away from international reliance. "I mean, who are the people? And I think that's one of the reasons why we've got to rebuild American manufacturing and support great companies like Vantage Plastics because we want these people to get off the streets and back to work. It'd be good for them and it'd be good for everybody else too," Vance stated, aligning the administration's strategy with social and economic benefits.

The focus on domestic manufacturing resonates with ongoing political discourse aimed at minimizing outsourcing and increasing local employment. With plans for tariffs and industrial support offices, the Trump administration seeks to spearhead a manufacturing renaissance across the nation.

Vantage Plastics serves as a case study for how grants and supportive policies can bolster regional growth despite public protest and skepticism.

Vice President Vance's visit emphasized both the economic strides made under the administration and the importance of continuing to support manufacturing jobs in the U.S. through targeted policies and tariffs.

In summary, the focus remains on nurturing American manufacturing with strategic interventions, aiming to quell unemployment and galvanize local economies in alignment with national interests.
