Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency makes a bold move.
According to Fox News, Over 200,000 government credit cards have been canceled as a measure against financial waste.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), under the leadership of Elon Musk, recently concluded an expansive review of federal credit card usage. This scrutinization was part of a pilot program covering 16 federal agencies, aiming to identify and cut down on unnecessary or unused financial resources.
The audit revealed a staggering number of active cards and transactions. Across the inspected agencies, there were 4.6 million active cards participating in approximately 90 million transactions during the fiscal year 2024, accumulating about $40 billion in expenditures. DOGE reviewed this massive array of financial activity and identified 171,120 travel cards and 33,681 purchase cards as unused and therefore ready for elimination. This considerable reduction in credit cards is a strategic move to reinforce government spending efficiency.
The affected departments spanned a wide range of federal entities. Notable among them, the Interior Department saw the largest number of cancellations, with almost 60,000 cards, followed by the Health and Human Services Department, which had over 45,000 cards deactivated.
The review extended beyond just credit card use. A surprising find from the audit was that the Small Business Administration (SBA) had incorrectly granted approximately 5,600 loans totaling $312 million to children aged 11 or younger during 2020 and 2021. This discovery underscores the necessity of DOGE’s mission to scrutinize and rectify inefficiencies within federal operations.
The only federal agency that did not have any of its credit cards canceled was the State Department, suggesting a possible variance in protocol or need compared to other departments. DOGE’s initiative is seen as a critical step towards restructuring how the federal government manages its finances, an effort that Elon Musk has emphasized is "central" to revitalizing the U.S. economy.
At a recent Cabinet meeting with President Trump, Elon Musk highlighted the department's ambitions to uncover $1 trillion in savings through various efficiencies. For Musk, these efforts are crucial to mitigating the national debt, thus avoiding what he described as becoming "de facto bankrupt."
