Former U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama's ambitious Chicago project encounter unexpected challenges.
According to Daily Mail, major donors, including Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, have withdrawn their support for the Obama Presidential Center amid circulating rumors about the couple's marriage troubles.
The project's fundraising efforts experienced a dramatic decline of more than 50 percent following 2022 when Bezos and Chesky each contributed $100 million. This significant drop in donations has raised concerns about the center's future, particularly as it faces additional challenges, including a $40 million racial discrimination lawsuit.
The 225-foot watchtower library and museum project on Chicago's south side has encountered mounting difficulties in securing continued financial backing. One unnamed donor, who reduced their contribution significantly, criticized the former president's approach to fundraising relationships.
An anonymous donor expressed their frustration with the situation, stating:
He's arrogant. He didn't help others when they were trying to fundraise and so they're not going to look out for the Obamas now. They're no quid-pro-quo because it's a one-way street.
The center's financial management has also come under scrutiny, with reports revealing substantial executive compensation packages. In 2023, more than $5 million was allocated for executive compensation, while over $27.36 million went to other wages, including a $740,000 salary for Obama confidant Valerie Jarrett.
Robert McGee, owner of South Side-based firm II in One, has filed a federal lawsuit against New York-based Thornton Tomasetti, seeking compensation for construction costs. The lawsuit alleges racial discrimination and claims that McGee's company faced excessive scrutiny and unnecessary paperwork requirements that resulted in millions in losses.
Thornton Tomasetti has denied these allegations, attributing construction delays and costs to what they describe as underperformance and inexperience from the black-owned subcontractor. The firm provided evidence of cracked slabs and exposed rebar, citing hundreds of requests for corrective work.
The Obama Foundation, through spokeswoman Emily Bittner, has addressed the situation by stating they would take immediate action if any vendor was found to be acting with racist intent, though they currently have no reason to believe this was the case with Thornton Tomasetti.
The presidential center's completion date has been repeatedly pushed back since its initial announcement. Originally scheduled to open in 2021, the project has faced numerous obstacles, including legal challenges regarding its location in Jackson Park and a brief construction halt in 2021 after a noose was found on site.
The budget has expanded significantly from its proposed $500 million to over $700 million. Despite these challenges, the Obama Foundation continues to manage the project through private donations, with a new projected opening date set for 2026.
The center aims to serve as a leadership training institute and community center while commemorating Obama's presidency. Its location near the University of Chicago, where Barack Obama taught constitutional law, and close to Michelle Obama's childhood neighborhood holds particular significance for the couple.
