According to ABC News, the United States has temporarily halted the implementation of tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days following discussions between Trump and the leaders of both nations on Monday.
The pause comes after separate conversations with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who agreed to strengthen their respective border security measures. Trudeau committed to implementing a $1.3 billion border reinforcement plan, while Sheinbaum promised to deploy 10,000 National Guard troops along the U.S.-Mexico border immediately.
The Canadian government's border enhancement strategy includes the deployment of new helicopters, advanced technology, and additional personnel. Trudeau also announced the appointment of a "fentanyl czar" to address drug trafficking concerns despite significantly lower fentanyl seizures at the northern border compared to the southern border in 2024.
Mexico's President Sheinbaum secured the temporary pause after a discussion with Trump about the bilateral trade relationship. We may have short term, some, a little pain, and people understand that, but, long term, the United States has been ripped off by virtually every country in the world.
Trump specifically targeted Canada's trade policies, accusing the nation of maintaining unfair practices. He pointed out restrictions on U.S. banks operating in Canada and limitations on American agricultural products and energy sector access.
