The Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands was rocked by a daring burglary using explosives.
During an early Saturday morning, thieves stole four precious Romanian artifacts, including the renowned Helmet of Cotofenesti, by breaching the museum's defenses explosively, BBC News reported.
Dutch police were called to the scene around 03:45 after reports of an explosion echoed through the area. The stolen artifacts were part of a significant exhibition showcasing ancient gold and silver jewelry from Romania, highlighted by three Dacian spiral bracelets and the ornate 2,500-year-old Helmet of Cotofenesti, famed for its intricate designs featuring mythological beasts and eyes.
In response to the theft, Romania's Ministry of Culture vowed to undertake all necessary measures to recover the priceless items loaned from Bucharest. The ministry declared its determination, referencing similar successful recoveries from the late 1990s when authorities returned other artifacts to Romania after unlawful sales abroad.
Harry Tupan, the Drents Museum Director, expressed profound shock among the staff due to the burglary's brazen nature, marking it as the institution's most severe incident in its nearly two centuries of history.
Amid the ongoing investigation, authorities have discovered a charred vehicle near the site, which they believe might be related to the crime. They suspect that the culprits might have switched to another vehicle after abandoning the burnt one to elude capture.
