Mysterious SUV-sized drones have again taken to the skies over New Jersey and New York.
According to the New York Post, the resurgence of drone activity coincides with the lifting of flight restrictions by the Federal Aviation Administration.
These aerial phenomena were briefly halted by regulations imposed by the FAA but have resumed with notable frequency. Enigma Labs, a data collection agency, has been pivotal in tracking these occurrences through a specialized map created for public and investigative access.
Christine Kim, a spokesperson for Enigma Labs, mentioned that the company has gathered over 100 drone sighting reports from across the country in the recent three weeks alone. These reports surged notably after January 17, when the FAA reversed its earlier restrictions. On that day, Enigma Labs recorded 22 fresh sightings.
During the enforcement of the FAA restrictions starting December 18, reports of drone sightings had decreased by 43%, showcasing the significant impact of the regulatory measures on drone appearances in the airspace.
The drones are not only varied in size but also in behavior, with over half of the sightings describing them as either hovering or maintaining flight for extended periods. Around a quarter of the reports account for drones moving in groups of five or more, often behaving in synchronized patterns. This swarm behavior adds another layer of complexity and intrigue to the ongoing investigations.
Christine Kim, from Enigma Labs, has offered further insight into the situation. She said, "In December, we introduced our live drone map to assist both the public and researchers in pinpointing and discussing these flying objects observed mainly around the tri-state area."
From the detailed tracking available, it has emerged that not all sightings are isolated; some reported phenomena include unusual aspects, such as color-shifting characteristics. One significant sighting occurred on January 14, over Hoboken, NJ, where onlookers described witnessing a color-altering object in the sky.
Adding to their suite of tools for engaging with the public, Enigma Labs is set to broaden access to their findings. "Next month, we're launching the Enigma Labs app for Android devices on the Google Play Store," Christine Kim added. This resource will complement their existing efforts, including a hotline established for direct reports, which is 1-833-SAW-A-UFO.
In response to the community's engagement and burgeoning interest, the total recorded sightings reached 22,000 in the year 2024 alone, with a significant number concentrated in the Northeast of the United States.
Enigma Labs has not only faced an explosion in drone sighting reports but remains a critical player in providing insights into this unusual spike in aerial activity. The recent events and subsequent public interest suggest a growing concern over airspace security and the identification of these mysterious objects.
Despite the intrigue they elicit, federal officials had previously discounted the reports as possible misidentifications of standard aircraft, although the recent frequency and nature of the reports challenge this dismissal.
