NYC Mayor Declares Non-Cooperation With ICE Deportation Efforts

 January 19, 2025

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has officially stated the city will not aid in federal deportation efforts.

According to the New York Post, Mayor Adams emphasized that NYC's status as a sanctuary city prevents it from aiding in the "Operation Safeguard" deportation plan led by President-elect Donald Trump.

The deportation program, "Operation Safeguard," targets migrants involved in violent crimes and drug trafficking. Officials plan to launch it within a week, initially affecting Chicago before expanding to New York.

New Policies Reflect NYC's Stance on Sanctuary

The 2014 and 2018 modifications to the sanctuary city regulations under former Mayor Bill de Blasio prevent city law enforcement, including NYPD, Department of Corrections, and Department of Probation, from collaborating on immigration enforcement unless it involves terrorism or poses a serious safety threat. This stance reflects New York's long-standing commitment to protect its immigrant populace while balancing public safety.

In a recent news conference, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch reiterated the department's policy, stating that the NYPD does not track immigration status and cannot participate in civil immigration enforcement due to legal restrictions.

However, this policy has met with internal criticism. An NYPD veteran criticized the city's reluctance to cooperate with federal immigration mandates. He shared, “It’s baffling that government officials want to protect immigrants in New York City who are committing crimes against everyday New Yorkers. Why wouldn’t you want these guys to leave? It’s baffling to me.”

ICE's Plan and Local Reactions

As "Operation Safeguard" prepares to roll out, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to deploy 200 officers for immigration raids beginning in Chicago, focusing on those who pose threats to public safety, according to Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan.

Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch have openly described their positions on multiple occasions. Adams expressed frustration about repeating these assurances, emphasizing the legal constraints preventing the city from assisting ICE. “The law is the law,” stated Mayor Adams.

Mayor Adams addressed the topic firmly, underlining the legal boundaries set by sanctuary city rules.

"I answered that over and over again. I’m not going to keep doing the same question over and over again about the cooperation of city agencies,” said Mayor Adams.

Funding and Resource Allocation for Immigrant Services

New York City has allocated nearly $7 billion since April 2022 to support asylum seekers and other immigrants. This substantial investment underscores the city's commitment to providing services and protection for its diverse population.

Despite these comprehensive expenditures and support systems, the upcoming federal directives under President-elect Trump pose new challenges to how cities like New York will navigate federal expectations without breaching local ordinances.

In conclusion, NYC's defiance against participating in federal deportation plans highlights a significant clash between local and national policies on immigration enforcement. Mayor Adams, along with NYPD officials, has outlined the legal rationale for their non-cooperation stance, stressing the city's commitment to safeguard its residents while adhering strictly to the laws governing sanctuary cities.
