FBI Debunks Claims About Trump Rally Shooter's Phone Access

 January 15, 2025

A circulating social media post sparked controversy over investigators' ability to access crucial evidence in the July 2024 Trump rally shooting investigation.

According to USA Today, claims suggesting authorities were unable to access the phone of Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old gunman responsible for injuring former President Donald Trump and killing one rally attendee, have been proven false.

The FBI successfully gained access to Crooks' phone within two days of the July 13 incident at the Butler Farm Show in Pennsylvania. During the attack, Trump sustained a graze wound to his right ear when shots were fired from a nearby rooftop. The violent episode resulted in one fatality and left two other attendees injured before a Secret Service sniper neutralized the threat.

FBI Investigation Reveals Extensive Digital Evidence Trail

FBI agent Kevin Rojek disclosed that investigators promptly sent the gunman's phone, along with a rifle and additional evidence, to their laboratory in Quantico, Virginia. The analysis of the device proved instrumental in understanding the shooter's motives and preparation. Despite using encrypted email accounts, the level of encryption was described as standard and commonly available.

Digital forensics unveiled a disturbing pattern of online activity spanning from 2019 to 2024. The investigation revealed multiple searches related to explosive devices and over 60 queries specifically focusing on President Joe Biden and Donald Trump in the month leading up to the attack.

The findings provided investigators with substantial insight into Crooks' mindset and the methodical nature of his attack planning. This information helped authorities piece together a comprehensive timeline of events leading up to the tragic incident.

Social Media Misinformation Attempts To Link Separate Incidents

The false narrative about phone access emerged on various social media platforms, including X, Threads, Instagram, and Facebook. One particular post garnered significant attention, receiving more than 15,000 shares on X alone.

The misleading claims attempted to draw parallels between the rally shooting investigation and two unrelated New Year's Day attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas. Social media users incorrectly suggested that authorities were more forthcoming with information about these separate incidents while struggling with the rally shooting case.

These comparisons specifically referenced media coverage of the New Orleans incident, where a reporter was granted access to the assailant's residence. However, these assertions failed to acknowledge the swift progress made in the Trump rally shooting investigation.

Critical Evidence Shapes Understanding Of the July Attack

Through meticulous examination of the recovered digital evidence, law enforcement officials constructed a detailed profile of the shooter's activities. The investigation demonstrated the effectiveness of modern forensic techniques in rapidly accessing and analyzing digital devices crucial to high-profile cases.

The case highlighted the importance of prompt evidence collection and analysis in major investigations. FBI officials maintained transparency throughout the process, regularly updating the public about significant developments in the case.

Recent findings have reinforced the thorough nature of the investigation, dispelling concerns about potential technological barriers to accessing critical evidence. The case continues to serve as an example of efficient coordination between federal agencies in response to threats against public figures.

Facts Emerge From Comprehensive Investigation

The July 2024 Trump rally shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, resulted in multiple casualties, including a fatal injury to one attendee and a minor wound to the former president. Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old shooter, was killed by Secret Service response teams during the incident. The FBI's rapid access to the shooter's phone and subsequent digital forensics revealed extensive preparation for the attack, including numerous searches about potential targets and weapons over several years.
