Republican Plan To Negotiate Greenland's Purchase Initiated

 January 14, 2025

Tennessee Republican Rep. Andy Ogles introduces groundbreaking legislation that could reshape American territorial expansion in the modern era.

According to The Western Journal, the "Make Greenland Great Again Act" would authorize President-elect Donald Trump to initiate negotiations with Denmark for acquiring Greenland once he returns to office.

The bill, which has garnered support from 10 Republican sponsors, including Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and Ohio Rep. Mike Rulli, outlines a clear timeline for the acquisition process. Under the proposed legislation, Trump could begin discussions with Danish officials immediately after his inauguration on January 20, with Congress having 60 calendar days to approve any potential agreement.

Republican Leaders Rally Behind Strategic Arctic Territory Push

Trump has consistently expressed his intention to pursue Greenland's acquisition, along with plans to retake the Panama Canal during his second term. His commitment to the initiative was emphasized in a December 22 Truth Social post, where he stressed the strategic importance of controlling Greenland.

Donald Trump Jr. has already taken preliminary steps by visiting Greenland alongside conservative activist Charlie Kirk in early January. The move signals the incoming administration's serious commitment to pursuing territorial expansion.

The timing of this legislative proposal coincides with growing concerns about Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic region. Greenland's vast reserves of rare earth minerals, uranium, oil, and other natural resources make it an increasingly valuable strategic asset.

Danish And Greenlandic Officials Present Mixed Response To Proposal

Mute Egede, Greenland's prime minister, has demonstrated an openness to dialogue while maintaining a clear stance on sovereignty. During a recent joint news conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Egede addressed the situation directly.

Egede stated:

We don't want to be Danes. We don't want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlandic. And of course it is the Greenlandic people who decide their future.

The legislation requires Trump to submit any potential agreement to congressional committees within five days of reaching a deal. This provision ensures proper oversight and legislative review of any territorial acquisition arrangements.

Complex Diplomatic Strategy Unfolds As Trump Prepares Return

Rep. Ogles defended the legislation during a Monday interview on Fox News, framing it as a necessary step to restore American global influence. He emphasized the contrast between the current administration's foreign policy approach and Trump's America First agenda.

The Florida congressman remarked:

Joe Biden took a blowtorch to our reputation these past four years, and before even taking office, President Trump is telling the world that America First is back. American economic and security interests will no longer take a backseat, and House Republicans are ready to help President Trump deliver for the American people.

The initiative has already generated significant support, with a Western Journal poll indicating 90% approval among respondents regarding the potential U.S. acquisition of Greenland.

Historic Territory Deal Takes Shape Under New Administration

The Make Greenland Great Again Act represents a bold move by Republican lawmakers to facilitate Trump's territorial expansion goals upon his return to office. Rep. Andy Ogles' legislation authorizes negotiations with Denmark for Greenland's purchase, setting specific timelines and procedures for the potential acquisition. While Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede has expressed willingness to engage in discussions, he maintains that any decisions about Greenland's future rest with its people.
