Rasmussen Poll Sparks Harris Debate

 December 14, 2024

A recent poll presents a new challenge for Vice President Kamala Harris, revealing significant voter interest in alternative Democratic presidential candidates for the 2028 election.

A new Rasmussen Reports survey finds many American voters, including a majority of Democrats, advocate for the Democratic Party to nominate someone other than Kamala Harris for the next presidential race, Breitbart reported.

According to the Rasmussen Reports poll conducted from December 1-3, a dominant sentiment echoes across party lines: many voters prefer a fresh face over Vice President Harris for the 2028 presidential election. The poll illustrates that 57 percent of Democrats, 66 percent of Republicans, and 60 percent of unaffiliated voters express this preference. Overall, 61 percent of likely voters favor a different candidate over the Vice President to lead the ticket. Meanwhile, support for Harris remains subdued with 32 percent of Democrats, 19 percent of Republicans, and 20 percent of unaffiliated voters favoring her candidacy for another presidential run.

Support for Harris Persists Despite Doubts

Despite this overarching sentiment against her candidacy, Vice President Harris continues to lead potential contenders for the Democratic nomination in 2028. In a recent poll conducted by Echelon Insights this November, Harris emerged as the frontrunner, maintaining a 33-point lead against other possible Democratic challengers. This poll measured Harris's support at 41 percent, with support for other possible candidates such as Governor Gavin Newsom at 8 percent, Josh Shapiro at 7 percent, and both Pete Buttigieg and Tim Walz at 6 percent.

Nevertheless, 59 percent of Echelon poll respondents still prefer an alternative candidate, signaling the complex dynamics within potential Democratic contenders. The focus on Harris reflects both her established political presence and the desire for new leadership within the Democratic Party.

These mixed sentiments have energized discussions around Harris's political future. Following her electoral defeat to President-elect Donald Trump, considerations about her running for the presidency in 2028 have gained attention amongst political analysts and voters alike. Despite the setback, Harris has garnered attention for a non-presidential role, prompting conversations about her potential candidacy for California governor.

Vice President Harris Eyes California?

Interest in Harris's potential gubernatorial run in California has grown, as another survey illustrates Californian voters' attitudes towards her as a state leader. Conducted with the Los Angeles Times and the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, this poll reveals mixed results for Harris as a prospective gubernatorial candidate. It indicates 33 percent of California voters are very likely to support her in a gubernatorial bid, while 13 percent are somewhat likely.

However, a noteworthy 36 percent of California voters declare they are "not at all likely" to support Harris as governor, underscoring the polarized views of her leadership ability within the state. Among California Democrats, 54 percent are very likely to support her candidacy, contrasting with 84 percent of Republicans who strongly oppose her potential bid for governor.

According to the poll report, "However, Democrats (32 percent) are just somewhat more likely than Republicans (19 percent) or unaffiliated voters (20 percent) to think it would be better for Democrats to have Harris as their candidate again in the next presidential election."

This diversity of opinion illustrates the complexities Harris faces in both strands of her political journey, reflecting a dual pathway that consists of both challenges and opportunities.

Voter Preferences Highlight Party Dynamics

The results of these polls spotlight the dynamic landscape of American politics where voter preferences often transcend party lines. The Rasmussen Reports survey showcases a compelling majority of voters across different groups, including Democrats, suggesting a shift towards alternative Democratic leadership.

This emerging narrative places added pressure on Vice President Harris to navigate her political future carefully, whether she pursues a national or a state governance role. The dangers of voter fatigue and the allure of fresh leadership could play decisive roles in determining the next Democratic nominee.

In summary, the Rasmussen Reports poll highlights the critical role public opinion plays as Vice President Harris considers her next political steps. The Democratic Party is faced with a defining period of introspection as it evaluates its 2028 strategy, while Harris maintains her position atop potential contenders. Meanwhile, California presents another avenue for Harris, albeit a challenging one given mixed sentiments about her governorship candidacy.
