The Fulton County District Attorney's Office is under scrutiny for refusing to release records related to communications with key figures in the January 6 investigation.
According to Fox News, the office claims such records either do not exist or are exempt from Georgia's open records law.
District Attorney Fani Willis’s office has denied any improper coordination with outgoing special counsel Jack Smith or the House January 6th Committee during her investigation into alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Conservative legal group Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit in March 2024, alleging that the DA’s office failed to provide requested records, prompting legal action and criticism from conservative circles.
On Monday, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney ruled that Willis’s office must produce any relevant documents within five business days. The judge found that the office violated Georgia’s open records law by not adequately addressing Judicial Watch's lawsuit. In its defense, the Fulton County Open Records Department stated that a “diligent search” revealed no records of communications between Willis and Smith.
The department further asserted that any records tied to the House January 6th Committee are legally exempt under Georgia law. Despite these claims, Judicial Watch and Republican lawmakers have raised questions about potential collaboration between Willis and the congressional committee.
