Four-Star General Hamilton Removed Over Promotion Interference

 December 11, 2024

A high-ranking military career spanning over four decades comes to an abrupt end for Army Gen. Charles Hamilton.

According to UPI News, Army Secretary Christine Wormuth announced the removal of Gen. Hamilton from his position as head of Army Materiel Command following an investigation into his interference with a subordinate's promotion process.

The Department of the Army Inspector General investigation revealed Hamilton's improper involvement in attempting to influence the promotion of a female lieutenant colonel. The investigation uncovered evidence of an inappropriate relationship between Hamilton and the officer, whom he had mentored.

Investigation Reveals Misconduct

The assessment board had initially voted unanimously against promoting the female officer, with all five members opposing her advancement. Despite this clear decision, Hamilton took unprecedented steps to intervene in the process.

The investigation found that Hamilton contacted potential panel members before a second review, attempting to discuss candidates and review parameters. His efforts proved unsuccessful, as the second panel also denied the officer's promotion.

Hamilton defended his mentorship choice, explaining that their shared racial background as Black officers influenced his decision to guide her career. He expressed concerns about systemic bias in the Army's selection process through a letter to Secretary Wormuth.

Army Leadership Responds

The Army maintained a firm stance on the integrity of its Command Assessment Program. Officials emphasized that the program successfully withstood interference attempts and will continue with increased transparency measures.

Lt. Gen. Chris Mohan has assumed the role of acting commander of Army Materiel Command. The Army will announce a permanent replacement for the position in due course.

In response to the situation, Hamilton addressed his concerns about the selection process. He wrote to Secretary Wormuth expressing his belief that the Army's process fails to consider the psychological impact of systemic bias, discrimination, and racism on prospective officers.

Final Chapter Unfolds

Hamilton reflected on his departure with a prepared statement shared with Task & Purpose:

While I wish I was able to complete my command, we all take the uniform off and we don't always control the timing. I look forward to continuing to serve our nation in new ways.

The investigation's findings highlighted the importance of maintaining proper boundaries in mentorship relationships. The Army's response demonstrates its commitment to preserving the integrity of its promotion processes and command structure.

The removal of a four-star general, particularly one with Hamilton's experience and tenure, represents a significant development in military leadership accountability.

Command Change Takes Effect

Gen. Charles Hamilton's removal from command marks the end of his 43-year military career following his interference in a subordinate's promotion process. The Army's inspector general investigation found evidence of both improper influence attempts and an inappropriate relationship with the female lieutenant colonel whose promotion he championed. Lt. Gen. Chris Mohan will continue serving as acting commander of Army Materiel Command while the Army searches for a permanent replacement.
