New York Times Reports Pete Hegseth's Mother Criticized Him in 2018 Email

 December 1, 2024

The controversy surrounds Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of Defense, following a critical email from his mother and a previous sexual assault allegation.

As Senate confirmation looms, revelations of his mother’s harsh words and an assault settlement bring intense scrutiny to Hegseth’s nomination, CNN reported.

President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Pete Hegseth, a former Fox News host, as the Secretary of Defense nominee. On April 30, 2018, amidst his divorce from his second wife, Penelope Hegseth sent him an email rebuking his treatment of women.

Email From Hegseth's Mother Adds Tension to Defense Nomination

In the email, Penelope Hegseth charged her son with abusive behavior towards women and urged him to get help. She expressed regret for her emotional tone following the email, though the content had already been disseminated.

Penelope Hegseth delivered a pointed and stern message. “I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around, and uses women for his power and ego. You are that man (and have been for years) and as your mother, it pains me and embarrasses me to say that, but it is the sad, sad truth.”

In addition to the family discord, Pete Hegseth faces unresolved issues from a 2017 sexual assault allegation. In October of that year, he allegedly prevented an accuser from leaving a hotel room and assaulted her. Though no charges were filed, Hegseth acknowledged the encounter but maintained that he and the other party had consensually engaged.

Past Settlement Comes to Light Amidst Confirmation Challenges

During the height of the "Me Too" movement, Hegseth chose to settle the allegation with a confidentiality agreement, paying a sum described as "significantly reduced" to avoid a public scandal and potential termination from Fox News. Timothy Parlatore, attorney for Hegseth, clarified the motivation behind the settlement was the preservation of Hegseth's career at Fox during a sensitive time.

Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director, defended Hegseth by criticizing The New York Times for their portrayal of the private email. “The New York Times and other outlets are despicable for using an out-of-context snippet of an illegally obtained private email exchange between a mother and her son that does not accurately reflect the entirety of the conversation,” he stated.

Senator Markwayne Mullin, backing Hegseth, dismissed the earlier allegation based on the police report, which he claims supports Hegseth’s narrative. He confidently remarked that nothing in the allegation prevented Hegseth from proceeding with his confirmation.

Senate Armed Services Committee Upcoming Hearings

Amid these controversies, the Senate Armed Services Committee will hold confirmation hearings for Hegseth. He has braced himself for the scrutiny and challenges ahead.

“The battle is just beginning,” Pete Hegseth remarked, prepared to address the allegations and familial criticism publicly. His perseverance through these adversities reflects his readiness to defend his capability and integrity for the role of Secretary of Defense.

This confirmation process certainly places a spotlight not only on Hegseth’s professional life but also on how personal elements can interject into public service roles.

As the Senate prepares to review his nomination, all aspects of Hegseth's past and his responses to these accusations will crucially impact his future in this high-stakes role.
