DNC Staff Union Sets Up GoFundMe for Laid-Off Workers Post-Election

 November 25, 2024

The DNC staff union recently initiated a GoFundMe campaign to aid staffers who were abruptly laid off following the 2024 elections.

According to Fox News, the campaign aims to collect $25,000 to support former employees in need after losing their jobs without severance.

The layoffs affected two-thirds of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) staff, a decision that hasn't sat well with the union or the remaining employees. The union criticized the DNC's senior leadership, labeling the layoffs as "callous" and "short-sighted." It expressed dismay that the leadership made these cuts despite previous assurances of job security post-election.

Fundraising Campaign Gathers Momentum

The GoFundMe page launched just days after the layoffs announced it and has already raised over half of its goal, amassing $15,453 to date. The union plans to distribute the collected funds equally among all consenting laid-off staffers.

The DNC staff union organizer, Jill Brownfield, highlighted the community's response: "We are heartbroken to see our colleagues – who dedicated countless hours to electing Democrats up and down the ballot – depart under these circumstances," and added the staff's collective disappointment and anger toward DNC leadership for their failure in providing severance to those impacted.

DNC spokespersons have defended their actions by stating that the organization has adhered to all terms of the collective bargaining agreement negotiated between the parties. The spokesperson acknowledged the industry's tough realities that led to post-cyclic layoffs but expressed sympathy and pledged ongoing support for the affected team members.

Union Demands Fair Severance and Transparency

In their public statements, the union has called for the DNC to provide severance for every permanently laid-off employee and demanded transparency about future proceedings for the remaining staff.

The campaign's GoFundMe page states, "We hope these funds can soften the economic blow for those impacted." This sentiment reflects the union's effort to alleviate some of the financial burdens the former staffers face as they seek new employment.

Both current employees and union members have harshly criticized the DNC's layoff strategy, finding the lack of severance payments and the sudden nature of the layoffs particularly grievous, given the previous commitments made by DNC leaders.

In a statement to the press, a union representative declared:

We are fighting for every former staff member to receive severance and urge the leadership to handle those who remain with honesty and transparency. The union also highlighted the harsh reality their colleagues face, noting they are left "scrambling to cover rent, medical expenses, and childcare costs" due to the abrupt layoffs.

Layoffs Spark Widespread Criticism and Support

As the GoFundMe page continues to gather donations, many are watching to see how the DNC will respond to the ongoing criticism. The events put additional scrutiny on how political organizations treat their employees during transitional periods, which are often inevitable due to the nature of the political cycle.

This situation at the DNC illustrates the delicate balance between managing resources following an election cycle and maintaining a responsible and ethical approach to employee relations.

Overall, the campaign has illuminated significant issues within the DNC concerning employee treatment post-election. The union continues to advocate for those affected and pushes for changes in how layoffs are handled in the future.
