Potential Picks for Attorney General in Trump's Second Term

 November 12, 2024

Donald Trump's upcoming administration has ignited discussions about his picks for key positions, including who will serve as the U.S. Attorney General.

President-elect Donald Trump's selection for the U.S. Attorney General remains undisclosed, with several candidates under consideration noted for their firm allegiance to his policies, Fox News reported.

Among the early contenders for this high-profile role are U.S. senators, former officials from the Justice Department, and advisors from Trump's prior tenure at the White House. The selection comes at a crucial time, as Trump prepares to be sworn in for another term this January.

Key Contenders for the Top Justice Department Role

Sen. Mike Lee of Utah is a significant figure among the potential nominees. A respected Republican and senior senator, his confirmation would likely face little opposition in Congress. However, Lee has publicly expressed his preference to continue his legislative work in the Senate.

He articulated his dedication to legislative duties in an interview, stating, "I have the job I want," and emphasized his eagerness to assist in advancing the Republican agenda alongside President Trump.

Former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe also stands out as a leading candidate. His background as a federal prosecutor and critic of the FBI, particularly during the Mueller investigation, aligns with Trump's preferences for a loyal and supportive Attorney General.

Rigid Stances on Justice Department Loyalty

Mark Paoletta, who served as a White House attorney during Trump's first administration and is presently assisting with the transition, is another strong contender. Paoletta has made clear his views on the need for Justice Department compliance with the presidential agenda.

Here is what Paoletta had to say about non-complying DOJ employees:

If these career DOJ employees won’t implement President Trump’s program in good faith, they should leave," adding that failing to support the President's initiatives should have serious repercussions including "disciplinary measures, or even termination."

Andrew Bailey, currently serving Missouri as Attorney General, is also being considered. His active role in multiple lawsuits against the policies of the prior Biden administration places him as a promising candidate who aligns well with Trump's legal and policy perspectives.

Considering Familiar Faces for Attorney General

Former Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker, who temporarily filled the position following Jeff Sessions' departure, remains a potential option. His insights reveal Trump’s preference for familiarity and trust in selecting his cabinet.

He stated that Trump values loyalty highly in his choice, seeking someone "who was there from the beginning" to face potential legal challenges effectively. This insight emphasizes the premium Trump places on known allies for this role.

As the search continues, the list of potential candidates highlights a common theme: a strong dedication to Trump's agenda and a willingness to act in staunch defense of his policies. This selection process indicates the strategic directions the second Trump administration intends to pursue, particularly in its judicial appointments.

These selections are crucial not just for their immediate roles but for the broader implications they hold for presidential support and policy implementation throughout Trump's term. The eventual nominee will play a pivotal role in shaping the legal landscape in line with Trump’s political objectives.
