Equinox Member Reevaluates Gym Alliance After Controversial Shirt Incident

 November 4, 2024

A dispute over an offensive shirt at an Equinox gym in New York has left a member considering his options.

Jared, a long-time patron, feels compelled to switch gyms after an incident involving his attire stirred discomfort and drew an apology from the facility, the New York Post reported.

Incident Spurred by Political Shirt

Jared's dissatisfaction stemmed from a recent visit while wearing a shirt with a controversial political message, which did not sit well with the gym's staff or its policies. The specifics of the incident, including the content on the shirt and the reaction of the gym personnel, were significant enough to prompt an official apology to Jared from Equinox.

However, the response from the gym has not assuaged Jared’s concerns, who stated, "The incident has soured him on Equinox and he’ll likely be looking for a new gym moving forward." This sentiment reflects a broader disappointment that could influence the decisions of other gym-goers.

Apology from Equinox

Following the incident, the gym reached out to Jared, attempting to mend the situation by expressing regret over the events. Despite the apology, Jared remains uncertain about continuing his membership, which costs a steep $350 per month.

The refusal of Equinox’s spokesperson and the involved staff member, identified as Ogunyinka, to comment on whether the action taken was based on personal political bias or gym policy only adds to the ambiguity and unease surrounding the event.

Not the First Political Controversy

This isn't the first time Equinox has been involved in political controversy. Back in 2019, Stephen Ross, an investor in Equinox and SoulCycle, hosted a high-profile fundraiser for former president Donald Trump, sparking a major backlash. Ticket prices for the event ranged dramatically from $5,600 to $250,000.

This led to a significant campaign initiated by trans activists on Change.org, urging patrons to cancel their memberships. The activists criticized Equinox for supporting what they described as harmful policies toward marginalized groups. They stated:

The company was supporting an administration that puts us in danger and works towards treating us like second-class citizens, and worse yet, subhuman.

Such incidents underscore the broader tensions that can arise when personal political beliefs intersect with business or service environments.

Customer Dissatisfaction and High Fees

The high cost of membership is a continuous concern for many, and incidents like the one involving Jared only amplify thoughts of cancellation. With prices like $350 a month, members expect a service that aligns closely with their values and offers a respectful environment.

Jared’s recent experience points to potential rifts between the gym’s management of customer relations and individual expectations. The lack of transparency over the application of policies during such disputes may contribute to member attrition.

To conclude, Jared’s experience at Equinox, compounded by the gym's previous political controversies, casts doubt on his continued membership. The incident apologized for by the gym, remains a tipping point for him as he assesses other fitness options. The balance between business policies, customer satisfaction, and membership costs continues to challenge Equinox in maintaining its clientele, especially in politically charged climates.
