Former child actor Zachery Ty Bryan found himself in another legal predicament after a routine traffic stop in Oklahoma turned into a DUI arrest.
According to Fox News, the "Home Improvement" star was arrested on October 25 in Custer County after refusing to take a sobriety test. The incident began when law enforcement discovered Bryan sleeping in his Range Rover on the side of the road.
Lt. Steven Cornell initially spotted Bryan at approximately 6:47 a.m. After parking his patrol vehicle up the road, Cornell observed Bryan starting his car and driving past him. The routine traffic stop that followed led to Bryan's admission of intoxication, prompting Trooper Kendrick Johnson to take over the DUI investigation.
During the interaction with law enforcement, Bryan was given the opportunity to take a breath test under the November 2022 Implied Consent test request. However, he explicitly declined the test, responding with a simple "no," as captured in the dashcam footage.
While being transported to jail in the front seat of the patrol vehicle, Bryan expressed remorse to Trooper Johnson. The actor's candid conversation revealed his current state of mind and his relationship with alcohol.
Bryan told Johnson during the recorded interaction that he was "running from California right now," expressing his strong dislike for the state. He also attempted to justify his actions by explaining that he thought pulling over to sleep was the responsible choice.
This recent arrest adds to Bryan's growing list of legal issues. Earlier in 2024, he faced similar charges in La Quinta, California, where he currently resides. That incident resulted in both felony DUI charges and a misdemeanor for contempt of court.
The actor was released on a $50,000 bail following the La Quinta arrest. The incident demonstrated a pattern of concerning behavior that would continue into his Oklahoma arrest.
During the Oklahoma arrest, Trooper Johnson offered this perspective to Bryan:
You have zero judgment from me. Here's the deal, I got you for driving under the influence. It's a safety deal. If we were just to leave you there and we're not going to know if you're going to stay there or drive away.
Bryan's legal troubles extend beyond DUI incidents. In July 2023, he faced charges related to a physical domestic dispute with an unnamed woman, resulting in two counts of assault in the fourth degree.
Through a negotiated plea agreement, Bryan received a reduced sentence of seven days in jail instead of the potential 19-20 months in the Oregon Department of Corrections. This came after pleading guilty to felony assault in the fourth degree constituting domestic violence.
During his recent arrest, Bryan expressed his feelings to the officer:
I'm just a good dude, man, I don't know why everybody – I'm sorry I like to drink.
The October 25 arrest in Oklahoma represents the latest chapter in Bryan's ongoing legal challenges. His refusal to take a sobriety test and subsequent admission about his drinking habits suggest a complex relationship with alcohol that continues to impact his life. The incident adds to a concerning pattern of behavior that includes multiple DUI arrests and domestic violence charges across several states.
