A decades-old romantic relationship between Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz and the daughter of a Chinese Communist Party official has resurfaced with startling revelations.
According to a report by The Western Journal, Jenna Wang has come forward with claims about their relationship during Walz's time as a teacher in China, describing how their breakup nearly drove her to suicide.
The 59-year-old Wang disclosed details about her relationship with Walz, which began in 1989 when they were both English teachers in Foshan, located in China's Guangdong province. Their romance kept secret due to her father's disapproval of Western relationships, developed through clandestine meetings and gift exchanges.
Wang described Walz as someone who struggled with singing and dancing but maintained engaging conversations. Their relationship deepened through intimate moments and Walz's frequent trips to Macau and Hong Kong, where he would purchase Western goods unavailable in mainland China for Wang.
The relationship continued through letters after Walz's return to the United States in 1990. Wang believed their correspondence, which included requests for her passport photo and personal information, indicated plans for their future together.
Wang even took the significant step of resigning from her teaching position when Walz returned to China in 1992, anticipating a new chapter in their lives together.
During a pivotal 10-day trip to Hainan Island, Wang confronted Walz about their future together. The conversation took an unexpected turn when Walz accused Wang of using him to obtain a U.S. visa.
Wang shared her emotional response to the accusation, stating:
Tim lied about Tiananmen Square, and he's lied about other things. This is a very crucial moment in history, and a man like this does not appear to have the character and integrity to do one of the most important jobs in the world.
The confrontation left Wang feeling deeply wounded, leading her to contemplate suicide. Instead, she chose to leave Walz during their trip, refusing his attempts to continue the discussion.
The revelation comes amid scrutiny of Walz's previous statements about his experiences in China and military service. Reports have surfaced challenging his claims about witnessing events in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests and his military combat experience.
These discrepancies have raised questions about Walz's credibility, with his only explanation for such misstatements being that he's a "knucklehead."
Wang eventually relocated to Europe following the breakup, explaining to the New York Post that the relationship's end forced her to leave her community. She expressed feeling deeply insulted by the experience and the need to rebuild her life elsewhere.
Neither the Harris-Walz campaign has responded to requests for comment from multiple news outlets regarding Wang's allegations. The story adds another layer of complexity to Walz's public image as he campaigns alongside Kamala Harris.
