Cullen Talton, a steadfast guardian of Houston County, has passed away.
According to People, Talton, renowned for his enduring 52-year tenure as sheriff, died at his residence on October 19, 2024.
Born on October 16, 1932, in Bonaire, Georgia, Cullen Talton initially embarked on a career in dairy farming before venturing into public service as a county commissioner. His election as sheriff in 1972, during Jimmy Carter's tenure as governor, marked the start of an epochal chapter in law enforcement history.
Following his recent retirement in January 2024, tributes honoring his dedicated service have poured in from across the state. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Warner Robins Mayor LaRhonda W. Patrick both commended his commitment and integrity.

The community bid farewell to Sheriff Talton at his funeral service on October 22, 2024, where friends, family, and colleagues gathered to pay their respects. In honor of his passionate support for the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes, his family has requested donations to the organization instead of flowers.
