On October 6, approximately 200 people participated in the Rescue Roosevelt Avenue rally. The demonstration, organized by the advocacy group Let's Improve Roosevelt Avenue, aimed to draw attention to the pervasive issues of prostitution and crime in the area.
Former NYC Council Member Hiram Monserrate addressed the crowd, expressing the community's frustration with the current state of affairs. He emphasized the importance of Roosevelt Avenue as a commercial corridor and the right of residents to feel safe in their neighborhoods.
The problem has reportedly worsened with the influx of migrants, particularly from Venezuela. Mayor Adams has acknowledged that many of the sex workers operating in the area are female Venezuelan migrants.
In response to the growing concerns, Mayor Adams announced a new initiative called "Operation Restore Roosevelt" on Tuesday. The 90-day program aims to address the various issues plaguing the area through a multi-agency approach.
During a press conference, Adams stated:
We will end sex trafficking in this area. We are not here for one day and go away. We’re here for the problem to go away. To tackle these issues, we are launching a multi-agency operation that brings together more than a dozen city agencies with state partners to make sure crime and quality-of-life issues are addressed.
Despite ongoing efforts by law enforcement, including raids on suspected brothels, the problem persists. Local residents report that some establishments reopen shortly after police interventions, and there are concerns about the proximity of these operations to schools.
NYPD Interim Commissioner Tom Donlon stressed the importance of a collaborative approach in addressing the community's concerns. He acknowledged the need for permanent solutions to longstanding public safety and quality-of-life issues.
While Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose district includes the affected area, has not publicly commented on the situation, neighboring Rep. Grace Meng has expressed concern and support for law enforcement efforts.
