Conservative Group Initiates Campaign Against Colorado Justice Over Trump Ballot Issue

 October 18, 2024

A new political campaign aimed at unseating a high-ranking Colorado judge has been launched by a conservative legal organization.

This initiative spearheaded by The Article III Project, targets Chief Justice Monica Márquez due to her controversial ruling against Donald Trump.

The organization behind this campaign, The Article III Project (A3P), led by Mike Davis, has focused on the actions of Chief Justice Monica Márquez of the Colorado Supreme Court.

In an unprecedented move, Márquez was a pivotal figure in the decision to exclude former President Donald Trump from the Colorado ballot. This decision, however, was later unanimously overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Details on the Campaign Against Márquez

Mike Davis announced the formation of the Article III Project Colorado, an independent expenditure committee. Their main objective is to oppose the retention of Chief Justice Monica Márquez in the upcoming November election.

To publicly challenge Márquez, the group has initiated a digital advertising campaign. The ads, which debuted on Friday, target voters across various social media platforms, drawing attention to the judge's vote to remove Trump.

In March, following the controversial decision in December led by Márquez, the U.S. Supreme Court rectified the ruling in a definitive 9-0 decision, calling into question the judgment of the Colorado Supreme Court's narrow 4-3 vote.

Impact of Supreme Court's Reversal

The reversal by the highest court in the country emphasized the severity of the initial decision made by Márquez and her colleagues. Mike Davis criticized this decision harshly. According to Davis, Márquez’s attempt to remove Trump from the ballot disenfranchised many of his supporters and showcased a disregard for democratic processes.

Following the reversal, political and legal debates ignited over the implications for future electoral decisions and judicial accountability.

Mike Davis made a pointed statement about Chief Justice Márquez’s actions, which was designed to mobilize opposition against her in the upcoming judicial retention vote:

Monica Márquez and three other leftwing Colorado justices illegally took President Trump off the Colorado ballot. Monica Márquez attempted to disenfranchise over 550,000 Colorado Trump primary voters. Her decision was so egregious the Supreme Court of the United States had to step in and reverse her, 9-to-0, with even the three leftwing justices reversing her.

Anticipated Voter Response

As the digital ads roll out, the focus of the campaign is clear: to persuade Colorado voters to vote against Márquez's retention on the Colorado Supreme Court. The ads emphasize her role in the unpopular decision and the subsequent national correction.

The campaign strategy includes highlighting the unanimous Supreme Court decision that overturned Márquez’s ruling, framing it as a failure on her part to uphold the principles of democracy and respect for voter rights.

Márquez is scheduled for a retention vote on November 5, making the timing of this campaign particularly critical.

Monica Márquez doesn’t respect the will of Colorado voters. She doesn’t respect democracy and the rule of law. So it’s time for Colorado voters to fire Monica Márquez in this November 5th election. Vote NO on the retention of Monica Márquez on the Colorado Supreme Court,

The campaign marks a significant development in the interplay between political advocacy and judicial processes.

It raises important questions about the influence of political organizations on judicial retention and the broader implications for judicial independence.

As this story develops, all eyes will be on the voter response to the campaign and the upcoming retention election, which could not only determine the future of Chief Justice Márquez but also set precedents for political influence in judicial processes.
