Senator JD Vance recently highlighted former President Donald Trump's role in his family's healthcare during a vice-presidential debate.
According to The Washington Post, despite criticisms of Trump for undermining the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Vance claimed it was Trump's leadership that enabled his mother and a cousin to purchase private health insurance through ACA marketplaces.
During his debate statements, Vance credited the Trump administration with his family's ability to gain health coverage for the first time through private insurance plans offered by the ACA, enacted in 2010 under President Barack Obama. The senator's mother and a cousin found coverage in Ohio and Florida's ACA marketplaces, respectively.
Vance's assertion stirred responses from political figures, including former President Barack Obama, who criticized Vance for attributing the ACA's survival to Trump. Obama highlighted the ironic praise given Trump’s previous efforts to dismantle the act.

Policy expert Andrew Sprung explains, "If any Vance family members transitioned to the marketplace because they earned out of Medicaid, they should be grateful that Trump and Republicans in Congress failed to repeal and replace the marketplace with an alternative that would have provided far less affordable coverage." Despite Trump's initial intentions to replace the ACA, existing structures remained largely intact, allowing continued access for many.
Vance has often acknowledged the ACA's impact on his family’s healthcare, contrary to his political allies' stances who sought the repeal of the law. This dichotomy highlights ongoing debates within the GOP regarding how to approach healthcare policy.
Policy analyst Lanhee Chen said, “If you look at the bulk of the activity during the administration’s time in office, you can point to a number of things that support the broader claims that they’re making about health care.”
The ACA’s journey through public opinion has been tumultuous, polling at only 38% favorability in 2014, significantly increasing to 62% in recent times, according to a KFF poll.
Last month’s announcement from the White House stated nearly 50 million individuals utilized ACA marketplaces for their healthcare, indicating a strong uptick in participation and public reliance on the policy.
Experts argue that the increase in marketplace participants may be directly related to expanded subsidies and other adjustments made during the Biden administration. "Many more people have coverage through the marketplace today because of the expanded subsidies that have been made available during the Biden administration," said health policy analyst Amy Rohling McGee.
Despite the political contentions surrounding its existence, the ACA has provided a means to secure health insurance for many Americans, including prominent political families like Vance's.
