Tech CEO Succumbs To Injuries After Fall At Zion National Park

 October 10, 2024

Tragedy struck in the picturesque setting of Zion National Park with the death of Justin Bingham.

Justin Bingham, aged 40, lost his life in a 200-foot fall while canyoneering in Heaps Canyon, a rigorous section of Zion National Park in Utah, the New York Post reported.

Justin Bingham was the CEO of Opiniion, a software company focused on property management solutions. The fatal accident occurred on a Saturday evening as Bingham, an adventurous father of four, was nearing the end of his canyoneering journey alongside three fellow climbers.

An Unexpected Tragic Incident

The abrupt fall that led to Bingham’s death was unexpected, highlighting the inherent risks of such adventurous endeavors. He plunged approximately 200 feet, leading to critical injuries that he succumbed to shortly afterward.

As the evening wore on, the Zion National Park Technical Search and Rescue Team alongside the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded rapidly to the scene. Despite their prompt actions, emergency responders pronounced Bingham dead before they could transport him to a hospital following an airlift operation executed by a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter.

The National Park Service, alongside Zion’s Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh, confirmed the accident appears to have been accidental. In a statement, Bradybaugh emphasized the Park's commitment to safety and expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time.”

A Commemoration of Life and Legacy

Known for his optimistic outlook on life and a keen affinity for outdoor activities such as skiing and canyoneering, Bingham had made a mark not just as a leader, but as a vibrant soul who brought positivity wherever he went. Devin Shurtleff, the president of Opiniion, spoke highly of Bingham’s enduring optimism and leadership:

If you spent any time around him, he was the eternal optimist. ‘Everything is always going to work out.’ He told me so many times…But he was right, and it usually did. Justin wasn’t just a leader here at Opiniion—he was a mentor, a dad, and a friend to many of us. He believed that the relationships we build are what make this work meaningful, and he truly lived that every day.

Bingham’s death came just days before he would have celebrated his 41st birthday, adding a layer of poignancy to the loss felt by his family and community. He leaves behind his wife Lindsay and their four children: Turin, Ashton, Landon, and Ava.

Final Farewell to a Respected Visionary

The software industry has lost a visionary whose impact extended beyond the professional sphere into the adventurous and familial aspects of his life. His funeral, set for October 14 in Alpine, Utah, will gather loved ones and colleagues to honor his memory and legacy.

Both his family and the broader community will dearly miss Bingham’s approach to life, which is characterized by a rare blend of adventure-seeking and entrepreneurial spirit.

His loss underscores the unpredictability of life and the importance of embracing every moment with optimism and energy, a philosophy by which Bingham lived fully until his untimely departure.

Nearing the synonymous end of Heaps Canyon as he did in life, Justin Bingham leaves a legacy of a life brimming with zest, leadership, and genuine human connections—hallmarks that will endure in the memories of those who knew him, both personally and professionally.
