Walz Distances Harris From Minnesota's Immigrant Policies

 October 7, 2024

A recent interview reveals a potential rift in the Democratic ticket's stance on immigration.

According to Fox News, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz distanced his state's policies on benefits for illegal immigrants from Vice President Kamala Harris during a Fox News Sunday appearance, where he was questioned about laws offering advantages to undocumented individuals.

Host Shannon Bream pressed Walz on legislation he approved that allows illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses and receive state-funded tuition assistance. When asked if these policies serve as magnets for illegal immigration and why Minnesota taxpayers should foot the bill, Walz responded by stating, "Well, that's not the vice president's position."

The governor then pivoted to highlight Minnesota's achievements, citing its ranking as a top business state and its high marks for children's living conditions and healthcare access. He also defended Harris's border policies, describing them as the "strongest" and "fairest" to date.

Walz Defends Abortion Stance Amid Scrutiny

The interview took a contentious turn when the topic shifted to abortion rights. Bream pointed out that Minnesota's current abortion law, which Walz signed, allows the procedure through all nine months of pregnancy without restrictions. This goes beyond the provisions of Roe v. Wade, which Harris and Walz claim to support.

When pressed on whether this extreme position should be advocated nationally by Democrats, Walz deflected, stating that he and the vice president have been clear about their desire to restore Roe v. Wade. He insisted that the Minnesota law doesn't change anything and merely puts the decision in the hands of women and their physicians.

The governor then shifted the focus to former President Donald Trump, accusing him of seeking a nationwide abortion ban. When Bream noted that Trump has repeatedly stated he would not sign such a ban, Walz bluntly called Trump's statement a lie.

Addressing Controversies And Missteps

Towards the end of the interview, Walz was given an opportunity to address criticisms regarding his "misstatements," including claims about his military service and his presence in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square massacre.

The governor defended himself by emphasizing his passion when speaking and his lengthy career before entering public office. He expressed pride in his 24 years of service and maintained that he has never disparaged others, unlike Trump.

Walz acknowledged his willingness to admit mistakes, stating:

I will own up when I misspeak. I will own up when I make a mistake.

He then redirected attention to what he perceived as a more pressing issue, referencing the recent vice presidential debate where his opponent allegedly refused to acknowledge Trump's loss in the 2020 election.

Conclusion

Governor Tim Walz's interview on Fox News Sunday highlighted the delicate balancing act faced by the Democratic ticket in addressing controversial issues. His attempts to distance Vice President Harris from his own state's immigration policies while defending their shared stance on abortion rights underscored the complexities of national campaigning.

Walz's willingness to address past misstatements while redirecting focus to his opponents' perceived shortcomings demonstrated the strategic maneuvering typical of high-stakes political discourse.
