Democratic Donors Linked To Controversial Election Strategy

 October 2, 2024

The Patriots Run Project is under a legal lens for its controversial method of contesting elections.

The scrutiny focuses on the organization for allegedly employing conservatives as strategic spoilers in pivotal congressional races, The Daily Caller reported.

The group, which enjoyed financial backing from various Democratic donors, aimed to manipulate election outcomes by inserting minimal-known conservatives into races where they could potentially split the vote. According to an Associated Press investigation, prominent Democrats David Steinglass and his spouse Liz are among those who funneled over $5 million into Democratic-linked political committees, some of which allegedly reached the Patriots Run Project.

The Intricacies of Election Interference

This tactic predominantly targeted retired or disabled individuals, persuading them to run in competitive House and Senate races, potentially diverting votes from mainstream conservative candidates. The profiles of the recruits ranged in the background but shared a common theme of minimal political influence or prior controversy. For instance, Thomas Leager, once linked to a kidnapping plot, successfully made it onto the Wisconsin Senate ballot following support from the Patriots Run Project.

Additional cases have surfaced, notably Joe Wiederien of Iowa, who eventually withdrew his candidacy upon realizing the possibility of being misled about the project's intentions.

As a result, his withdrawal subsequently led to him filing a complaint with the state's Division of Criminal Investigation—which is the unit that has since embarked on a formal investigation into the scheme crafted by the Patriots Run Project.

Legal Concerns and Democratic Integrity

The controversy surrounding these election tactics not only raises legal questions but also sparks a broader discussion regarding the integrity of the election process. Edward Foley, a law professor, voiced his concerns about such activities undermining democracy, emphasizing the seriousness of manipulating electoral outcomes.

"Whether it’s congressional or presidential races, this kind of activity is a real problem and it undermines the functioning of democracy," said Edward Foley, elaborating his disapproval of such strategies.

Political Responses and Implications

Zach Nunn, a dissenting voice within the Republican community, expressed his disdain for the alleged deception. During a public gathering, Nunn emphasized the importance of safeguarding electoral integrity and addressed the crucial stakes of the upcoming elections.

"When you try and steal an election by taking advantage of guys like Joe or any Iowans in this room, I don’t care what your party is, we fight back. We are but a handful of votes in Congress away from losing control of our economy, the border, and our future. It’s important that we win the Senate and we have the opportunity to win the White House. We never forget about the people’s houses. You are at the crossroads right now of making sure this happens."

Other individuals linked to the financial aspects of the Patriots Run Project, such as Richard Thompson and Joe Fox, have also come under scrutiny. Their prior engagements with Democratic campaigns and Political Action Committees (PACs) add layers of complexity to the ongoing investigations, signaling possible extensive networks of influence and funding.

The unfolding investigation by Iowa's Criminal Division may set a precedent for how similar strategies are handled legally. The repercussions of this case could influence election laws and the strategic plays of political parties, highlighting the fine line between strategy and manipulation in the fight for power in the U.S. electoral landscape.

As investigations continue, the narrative of election integrity versus strategic manipulation remains at the forefront of this controversy. Ensuring a transparent electoral process is crucial, as the ramifications of these tactics could reshape public trust and the effectiveness of democratic processes.
