Vance Radiates Assurance In Debate, Walz Appears Unease

 October 2, 2024

The recent vice presidential debate brought stark differences in demeanor between the two candidates to the forefront.

Republican Senator JD Vance of Ohio emerged as the more poised contender against Democrat Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, who displayed signs of nervousness, according to Fox News.

In the face of crucial national issues, Vance portrayed a calm and composed figure, well-versed in the topics at hand. Governor Walz, however, seemed less settled, often appearing jittery, which observers noted could undermine his position on several policy discussions.

Carole Lieberman Analyzes the Debate Body Language

Noted body language expert Carole Lieberman provided detailed commentary on the candidates' physical cues during the debate.

Lieberman suggested that Vance's overall authenticity made him a trustworthy figure in the eyes of viewers. Conversely, Walz's demeanor reflected his inner uncertainty, significantly impacting his debate performance. Lieberman observed, "JD Vance came across as being very steady; you could see him as a captain of the ship. And so, you felt like you would be safe with him."

The debate spanned a series of key topics, including the Middle East conflict, abortion laws, and economic policies. During these discussions, Vance maintained a logical and policy-oriented approach. This structured strategy contrasted sharply with Walz's, who at times appeared to falter under pressure.

Tim Walz Admits to Past Misstatement

Mid-debate, Governor Walz addressed his previously controversial statement regarding his presence at the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. He clarified that he had "misspoken," having been in Hong Kong during the events, not in Beijing as he had earlier claimed.

Carole Lieberman critiqued Governor Walz's handling of the mistake during the debate: "He was so defensive; he was just talking in circles and didn't want to admit that he had lied."

The moderation was occasionally disruptive, with the debate moderators having to intervene and mute microphones to maintain decorum, underscoring the heated nature of the discussions.

Post-Debate Reactions Lean Towards Vance

Post-debate analysis generally favored Vance, crediting his confident, policy-driven performance as instrumental in casting him as the preferable candidate.

Despite this favorable outcome for Vance, the debate focused on policy over personal attacks, providing the audience with a substantive discussion on future governance.

Vance, a relatively newer addition to the Senate since January 2023, demonstrated seasoned debating skills that stood out against Walz’s more extensive political background. Lieberman's appraisal of Vance continued, "Whereas with JD, you could see the Yale debater. He wanted to 'Let's go, I can't wait to do this, I'm going to do it'… he's Trump lite."

The debate underscored a clear division in approach and style between the two candidates, setting a narrative that may influence voters as they head to the polls. Vance's steady and informed performance compared favorably against Walz’s more frazzled demeanor, casting the former as the anchor in a stormy sea of politics.
